With just a few weeks to go until the launch of the next generation game consoles, it seems that most early buyers have already made up their minds. But if you still haven’t decided between the PS4 and Xbox One, a new comparison video from IGN may help you…or not.
The three minute video compares Battlefield 4 gameplay side-by-side on the next gen consoles and, to our eyes, it looks about the same on both. Sure, there are moments when the Xbox One version looks like it has better lighting, or the PS4 version seems to have a grittier texture or two but, overall, most would be hard-pressed to tell the two apart. In the words of one video commenter: “The PC won.”
It’s also important to remember that the graphics and gameplay of many early titles aren’t indicative of either console’s true performance. It’s only after years of familiarity and new techniques that game developers can really push a console to its limits. Take, for instance, the launch games for both the PS3 and Xbox 360. While certainly a step up from the previous generation, most of those early games look and play terrible compared to recent titles like Grand Theft Auto V.
Still, we’ll be seeing a lot more comparisons in the next few weeks, and if they continue to reveal shockingly similar graphics performance, then it will fall to each console’s other attributes to move units off the shelves.
The PS4 launches in North America on November 15th, followed a week later by the Xbox One on the 22nd. Battlefield 4 launched today for the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3. The PS4 and Xbox One versions will hit shelves on November 12th and 19th, respectively.
