This is a rumour. I repeat, this is a rumour. Do not take this as gospel, but apparently the first details for Rockstar’s inevitable GTA 6 have been leaked via a user on Reddit. Not the most reliable of sources, then.
Again, this is a rumour. I normally wouldn’t bother with such rumours, but given that it’s a Monday afternoon and there’s no much else going on, I thought it’d make for some decent reading. Plus, who am I to turn down the chance to put GTA 6 and PS5 in the same headline? That’s an amazing SEO opportunity I’m not going to pass up.
Alright, so the rumour is that Rockstar has been working on GTA 6 since 2012, but production only really got fully underway in 2015, though it was still slow as the teams were all busy building Red Dead Redemption 2. Sounds plausible.
According to the Reddit user who has leaked this information, this info comes from two of the user’s friends who have worked at Kotaku and PC Gamer. Additionally, the user claims that they have a good friend who works for Rockstar and that said friend wouldn’t outright deny the information. I know, it’s sketchy as hell, but it’s a good read anyway. Just don’t get too excited.
Apparently GTA 6 is set in two locations: Vice City and a new South American city based on Rio de Janeiro. The leaker also claims that there will be linear missions taking place in Liberty City, though you won’t be able to explore the whole city. Hence the game’s working title: Project Americas.
The leaker also claims that the game will be set in the 1970s and 1980s, with just one playable character this time around. The playable character is an up-and-coming drug lord who starts off doing small jobs smuggling drugs to and from Vice City before getting cosy with the big-time criminals.
It seems fitting, then, that the game is supposedly heavily inspired by the hit Netflix crime-drama Narcos, as well as Quentin Tarantino movies.
The leaker claims that buildings change over eras, and that vehicles do, too, and that older cars become classics that will become more valuable over time. This kind of seems at odds with the claim that the game takes place during the 70s and 80s. How much can buildings really chance over the course of a decade? Not that much. And would a car suddenly become more valuable because it’s a few years old? No, not really. Cars become classics after a much longer period.
Another thing the leaker claims is that players won’t be able to carry a full arsenal of weapons on them at all times. Instead, you’ll be restricted to just what a man could actually carry. The rest of your weapons will be stored in the boot/trunk of your personal vehicle, much like how weaponry works in Red Dead Redemption 2.
In Red Dead Redemption 2, I can kind of understand it. The game was going for realism. But this is GTA. A series known for its silly toilet humour and fun destruction. It seems unlikely to me that Rockstar would hamstring the potential fun by limiting what players can carry to cause mayhem. Also, the idea of a personal vehicle? Again, it sounds off to me. One of the biggest parts of GTA is being able to steal any vehicle that you can see, so again, the idea of being tied to one vehicle is at odds with what GTA is all about.
The leaker also claims that the game is in pre-alpha at the moment, and so things could and most likely will change. One thing that won’t change, however, is that the game is targeting PS5 and the next Xbox console, and won’t release on PS4/Xbox One. This seems like a no-brainer, really, as we’re heading towards the end of this generation and haven’t heard a peep from Rockstar about a GTA V sequel.
Personally, I’m not convinced by this “leaker.” Some things seem possible, others seem to go against the nature of Grand Theft Auto. Still, it’s fun to speculate, and I guess we’ll find out at some point as to whether this is all true or not. Personally, I’m hoping GTA 6 takes us to Las Venturas instead of Vice City. Bright light city and all that…
