With Mortal Kombat 11 coming out in 2019, NetherRealm Studios is once again getting asked frequently for what their next title is going to be. To nobody’s surprise—they have two potential titles that could be in the works soon.
As confirmed by NetherRealm head Ed Boon, the next game for the studio could either be Mortal Kombat 12 or Injustice 3. This was confirmed when a fan asked on Twitter:
With Injustice 2 coming out back in 2017, you would think that franchise is prime for a new-gen update, but if NetherRealm wants to work on their bread-and-butter franchise first, I think they have every right to.
Admittedly, over the past few years, it seems that NetherRealm has been stuck in a never-ending circle of developing either a Mortal Kombat game or an Injustice game. The last time they really got crazy was when they made Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe; I mean, the game was poorly received, but it did spawn the Injustice series. With all their other ‘big’ games in the works, you’d think that the studio would have something more original in development somewhere behind-the-scenes.
So far, the only other idea I have for a game would be a crossover with other fighting game titles like Street Fighter or Tekken, but those gimmicks usually end up being forgotten. I guess the only successful crossover franchise is Marvel vs. Capcom, but lightning doesn’t strike twice in the same place.
How about an MK: Shaolin Monks reboot for the new-gen? A new game based on the characters from the new movies?
For now, you can check out Mortal Kombat 11 now playable for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4|5, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
