There are some changes in mechanics from Odyssey to Valhalla. However, all in all the whole theme of the game, and many of the mechanics are transferred to the successor.
For example, the healing system is more or less a copy of the one that was in Odyssey. Nonetheless, not everyone has played the predecessor, so they might not be familiar with the healing system.
How to Heal – Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
Firstly, you need to know where to get food for your health. There are berries and mushrooms throughout the world in Valhalla.
These can either be eaten on the spot (if you are low health), or you can put them in you backpack for later use. Usually, the latter is more likely, so collect these whenever you can.
On top of that, you can get similar foods from merchants or shops in some bigger cities.
To heal in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla you will fill up your ration bag as you pick up berries, mushrooms and fish. Then, the rations can be used by clicking right on the D Pad.
Using these rations will drastically increase your health. This is the most effective way of replenishing health in this game.

One change that has been detrimental in Valhalla, was the switch from the ability to heal in battle, to no healing capabilities in fights.
In Odyssey, you could replenish your health as much as you want in battles, well, until you ran out of food. However, the developers felt like this shouldn’t be in the all-new successor.
Summing up all of this, gives you the impression that you need to always have the ration bag full! Never let yourself run out of rations, so while you are exploring, make sure to gather food.
