Rockstar Games has announced over on the Rockstar Newswire that there’s a big update heading to Red Dead Redemption 2’s online suite, Red Dead Online, and that it’ll include a lot of new content, including three new character roles for players to sink their teeth into.
The new update, which is supposedly dropping “later this summer” will introduce specialist roles to Red Dead Online, with each role offering their own progression paths and experiences. There will be three roles to begin with, and with more to come at a later date.
The roles are: Bounty Hunter, Trader and Collector. The Bounty Hunter can track down targets, albeit licensed by the law. You’ll be able to hunt and kill (or capture, if you’re merciful) non-player targets as well as the occasional real-life player target if they’ve a big enough bounty on their head. By living the life of a Bounty Hunter you’ll be able to unlock special items such as a reinforced lasso, and some fancy gun-spinning tricks to impress others. You’ll also be able to unlock advanced tracking skills and the ability to use Eagle Eye while sprinting on foot or riding your horse. Rockstar says that there are “many other special skills, items and upgrades” in store for those who play as a Bounty Hunter. No doubt there’s something in the game’s store for everyone… Is there a casino yet?
If you fancy yourself as something of an entrepreneur, you could go down the route of a Trader as you do business from your humble camp. You’ll be aided by Cripps’ expertise knowledge which in turn will allow you to collect new goods and produce valuable wares to sell on for a sweet profit. Increasing your Trader skills unlocks the ability to upgrade your camp with a weapons lockers, stew pot, and you can even keep a trusty canine around to ward off would-be attackers. Nothing like a good boy to keep your business safe.
If you’re a bit of a scrounger who likes digging in the dirt, perhaps the Collector role will suit you best. You’ll go on the hunt for lost jewelry, rare trinkets and other valuable bits and bobs that can be sold for cold hard cash, either as individual items or as pristine high-value sets. Progression includes unlocking new tools to help you locate those hard-to-find goodies, such as Refined Binoculars and even a Metal Detector, among other skills.
Rockstar has also announced that there will be some other changes to Red Dead Online, specifically in the way the game controls.
“Substantial, across the board changes are being made to combat and movement to allow for a more responsive control system that still feels natural,” reads the blog post. This is perhaps a bigger deal than most realise. One of my big criticisms in my Red Dead Redemption 2 review was that the controls were clunky as hell. Unfortunately, it looks like the refined controls will only be coming to Red Dead Online, and not the single player portion of Red Dead Redemption 2. As expected, the single player experience is being left alone in favour of building out the online offerings, because that’s where the money is. I’d say keep your fingers crossed for some Red Dead Redemption 2 single player DLC, but you’ll probably end up with crooked fingers waiting that long.
