2018 saw the release of the last Lara Croft adventure Shadow of the Tomb Raider, but thanks to the State of Unreal 2022, we now have confirmation that we could be meeting Ms. Croft for another thrill-seeking adventure soon enough.
Crystal Dynamics franchise general manager Dallas Dickinson has confirmed that the next Tomb Raider game is already in the works at CD. Dickinson announces, “We’re thrilled to announced today that we have just started development of our next Tomb Raider game powered by Unreal Engine 5. Our goal is to push the envelope of fidelity and to deliver the high-quality cinematic action/adventure experience that fans deserve from both Crystal Dynamics and the Tomb Raider franchise. We can’t wait to take this journey together.”
No actual details have been revealed about the game, but we do know that it would have been more than five years since Crystal Dynamics had made a Tomb Raider title. Though we did get Shadow back in 2018, the last game from CD was actually Rise of the Tomb Raider which came out in 2015. CD had to give the reins over to Eidos Montreal because they were busy working on the Avengers game—and we know how that one turned out.
With the rise of the new-generation of consoles, you can bet that there is pressure for Crystal Dynamics to bring the thunder with the next Tomb Raider. After all, Lara Croft is one of the most iconic characters in gaming, and her new-gen debut shouldn’t be anything less than stellar.
No release date has been set for the next Tomb Raider game, but hopefully we can get another update before the year ends.
