After the dismal reviews of Avengers: A-Day, Marvel fans weren’t so keen on getting into Square Enix’s Guardians of the Galaxy when it was announced. Oddly though, the game has been receiving great reviews and word-of-mouth, and Eidos Montreal has ‘no regrets’ when it comes to the game.

Eidos Montreal Looks Back at the Late Success of Guardians of the Galaxy

Talking to Eurogamer, GOTG senior creative director Jean-Francois Dugas explains:

“I have no regrets… We did everything we could but that’s the reality of the market… And let’s not forget it’s a new IP. Even though we say all ‘Guardians [of the Galaxy] are known’, it’s still a new IP [in the video game market]. It could be a lot of people don’t even know that the game is out yet, or they’re not sure exactly what it is.”

When the game launched back in 2021, it had admittedly underperformed when it came to sales, and a lot of fans thought it also had something to do with the terrible reception of the Avengers game. Despite the commercial lack of success, the game still managed to gain great reviews, and its inclusion on Xbox’s Game Pass allowed it to get even more players and improve sales.

While Dugas’ statement doesn’t really confirm a sequel, the fan reception alone is probably a hint that people could want more of this version of the Guardians to come back for a follow-up. With Marvel Studios ready to wrap-up the story of the onscreen Guardians, Square would be smart to try and keep the hype going for a little bit longer.

Square Enix’s Guardians of the Galaxy is now playable for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation 4|5, and the Nintendo Switch.
