The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has managed to impress with its launch, and everyone has been applauding this massive open world. With more Zelda games expected in the future, producer Eiji Aonuma explains how Breath of the Wild and Tears will influence incoming titles.
Talking to Game Informer, Aonuma explains how future Zelda games will adapt the open-world format of the Nintendo Switch-era titles. He says:
“With Ocarina of Time, I think it’s correct to say that it did kind of create a format for a number of titles in the franchise that came after it… But in some ways, that was a little bit restricting for us. While we always aim to give the player freedoms of certain kinds, there were certain things that format didn’t really afford in giving people freedom. Of course, the series continued to evolve after Ocarina of Time, but I think it’s also fair to say now that we’ve arrived at Breath of the Wild and the new type of more open play and freedom that it affords. Yeah, I think it’s correct to say that it has created a new kind of format for the series to proceed from.”
Besides the open world, Tears of the Kingdom has managed to impress with its crazy crafting system, which allows players to make any kind of weapon/vehicle with the materials they can find in the game. This has led to multiple videos of players building all kinds of tanks, battle planes, and goofy weapons to take on the game’s creatures.
Nintendo has certainly impressed with Tears, especially since they made it run on a 6-year-old console, and I’m curious just how much they plan to expand the players’ options when it comes to the next entry.
We don’t have a release for the next Zelda game yet, but you can play The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, now available for the Nintendo Switch.
