When it comes to retro-themed games, the IP is usually original with some occasional big franchises getting releases like TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge. What’s cool is, Warhammer 40,000 has this new retro shooter Boltgun, and it pretty much embraces the aesthetics of the original Doom.

Check out the launch trailer:

It is time to purge the heretics!

Load up your Boltgun and plunge into battle headfirst! Experience a perfect blend of Warhammer 40,000, classic, frenetic FPS gameplay and the stylish visuals of your favourite 90’s retro shooters.

Play as a battle-hardened Space Marine on a perilous mission across the galaxy, as they battle against the Chaos Space Marines and daemons of Chaos.

In glorious boomer shooter style, unleash your devastating Space Marine arsenal as you blast through an explosion of sprites, pixels and blood. Run, jump and charge across huge levels to shoot, shred and slice the worst heretics across the galaxy!

Only in death does duty end!

What’s also great is that there’s a 10% launch discount for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (via Steam), but it’s only available for a limited time, so you should get it while it’s available.

I’ll admit, usually retro games like to stick to the 2D-Metroidvania format, but it’s pretty unique to see an actual shooter try to emulate the look of the classic games; in a well-established franchise like Warhammer 40,000 too.

I expect Boltgun to be a good time for Warhammer fans, but hopefully it should also be a great entry point for gamers unfamiliar with the series.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is now available for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S,  PC, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4|5.
