Rockstar Games just dropped a huge announcement this morning with regard to Grand Theft Auto 5 and the standalone Grand Theft Auto Online. The current-gen versions of those games — for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S — finally have a release date. According to Rockstar’s blog post, you can expect to play the decked out versions of GTA 5 and GTA Online on Nov. 11, 2021. That puts the launch date less than six months away.

(This may or may not be the Grand Theft Auto news you were hoping for, but it’s something, right?)

Sadly, the release date was pretty much all Rockstar had to reveal at this stage. The most we got out of the studio was that the ports will have “new features and more.” I’m intensely curious about what the new versions of GTA 5 will be capable of from a graphical standpoint, but there’s nothing new to report there. If we can hit 60 frames-per-second, I’ll be happy. If Rockstar can work some magic and get ray-tracing to run with higher frame rates, that’ll be even better.

I’m also wondering about the upgrade path for Xbox players. It’s been stated that those with the PS4 version of Grand Theft Auto 5 will get an upgrade to the PS5 version for free. Will the same hold for those who have the Xbox One version of the game? Or is that tied specifically to Rockstar’s marketing deal with Sony?

If you can find a silver lining to the lack of news in here, it’s this: the work on Grand Theft Auto 5 for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S is likely helping Rockstar with Grand Theft Auto 6. The company has yet to put a game on the newer consoles. It hasn’t optimized any other past releases for them. So the new GTA 5 may be as much about getting Rockstar experience as it is bringing this highly played game forward.

We’ll keep a close eye out for news on all the things Rockstar didn’t tell us here. As soon as there’s more, we’ll get it to you.
