[SPOILERS FOR HORIZON FORBIDDEN WEST: BURNING SHORES]
The new character of Seyka had been hyped up before the release of the Burning Shores expansion for Horizon Forbidden West. Still, fans didn’t expect that the DLC was hyping a romance between her and Aloy.
As expected, many gamers online were unhappy about it, and they decided to retaliate the only way a gamer could—by review-bombing the game online.
According to Kotaku, homophobes have gone to Metacritic to give Burning Shores a terrible review. While the critic’s score is 82, the user score has decreased to 3.2.
Despite the industry’s best efforts to be more inclusive, there will always be a vocal minority that will always have something to say about how ‘woke culture is ruining everything.’ Besides Horizon, properties like The Last of Us Part II and HBO’s The Last of Us series were also met with review-bombing from angry homophobes. If anything, I’m sure the writers at Guerrilla were already expecting something like this to happen.
If anything, some fans weren’t surprised that Aloy would be interested in women. After all, she’s already rejected men’s advances for two whole games, so a romance with another capable outsider should be a no-brainer for a character like her.
With a third Horizon game said to be in the works, I’m curious if Seyka will be part of the story at launch. Hopefully, this doesn’t lead to more hateful rallying from the anti-woke crowd (but it probably will).
Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores is now available for the PS5.
