Popular Australian animated TV series Bluey was just given its first game adaptation in Bluey: The Videogame. Released on November 17th, 2023, Bluey: The Videogame is many kids’ chance to see and play their favorite energetic Heeler puppy on the PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.

We will walk you through what you need to know about Bluey: The Videogame and whether it is worth adding the cartoon-based title to your game library in 2023.

Is it Worth Buying Bluey: The Videogame?

From a cost perspective, Bluey: The video game is expensive because of its very short gameplay and limited content. The game costs $40, but whether the game is worth $40 is for you to decide. If you’re just looking to give your 3-year-old their first gaming experience and don’t mind paying the relatively hefty price tag, Bluey: The Videogame is an okay choice.

Bluey: The Videogame features a sandbox-style environment with free-roam elements and local co-op with up to three other players. You can explore familiar Bluey TV show locations, play as any of the four members of the Heeler family, and dabble in familiar mini-games such as Keepy Uppy and Magic Xylophone.

The game’s main campaign mode is split into four Episodes, each lasting around 15 minutes. There are also optional items that players can collect, such as costumes, stickers, and episodes, to name a few. All of which extends the game’s total playtime, but not by much.

Speaking of playtime, the game’s main campaign can be beaten in around one hour, with collectibles and other post-campaign content adding 2-3 more hours to the game’s total playtime.

Bluey: The Videogame offers just enough entertainment, content, and replayability if you’re a kid, but to the hard-working parent, paying $40 for a game that only spans 3 hours at best is, arguably, a bad investment, even if the game features one of the most popular cartoon dogs.

With that said, while Bluey: The Videogame might not seem like a good buy at $40 (especially when you consider games such as Zelda: Breath of the Wild cost just $20 more), games such as Bluey: The Videogame are meant to give younger audiences the ability to see and experience their favorite cartoon character (in this case, Bluey) in a fresh, interactive way.

Bluey: The Videogame has 4 Episodes, each lasting about 15 minutes for about 1 hour of gameplay. If you include the time required to find all the optional collectibles, you’ll spend another 2-3 hours, pushing the game’s total playthrough time to around 4 hours.

You can play as Bluey, Bingo, Chilli (Mum), or Bandit (Dad) and explore locations seen in the cartoon, such as The Heeler’s House, The Playground, The Backyard, The Creek, and The Beach. You can also play four mini-games as seen in the TV show, such as Keepy Uppy, Ground is Lava, Chattermax Chase, and Magic Xylophone.

What system is the Bluey: The Videogame game on?

Bluey: The Videogame is available on PC via Steam, the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and the Nintendo Switch.

The game is eligible for double Entry on PlayStation or Smart Delivery on Xbox. This allows PlayStation 4 owners to buy and carry over Bluey: The Videogame to the PlayStation 5 at no additional cost. The same goes for the Xbox, where Smart Delivery allows players to carry over their copy of Bluey: The Videogame from previous generation Xbox consoles to the current-gen Xbox Series X|S.

It is worth noting that performance will differ somewhat between different platforms. On the Nintendo Switch, Bluey: The Videogame will run at 30FPS at 1080p resolution when docked, but just 720p in portable mode.

Meanwhile, on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC, Bluey: The Videogame will support a max resolution of 4K at 60 FPS. The Xbox Series S, however, will only run at a max of 1440p at 60 FPS.

Final Thoughts

At around $40, Bluey: The Videogame is expensive considering its limited content, offering just 4 Episodes spanning 15 minutes each. While there is some post-campaign content to enjoy, you can also complete these in just a few more hours, which means the game never offers more than five hours of gameplay. Whether the few hours of gameplay is worth the game’s $40 price tag will be up to you to decide.
