A recent earnings call for Warner Bros. Discovery has revealed that NetherRealm plans to release the next Mortal Kombat game this year, but until now, we have yet to get an update.
With some starting to speculate that the studio won’t make their 2023 deadline, journalist Jez Corden hints that we could get our first look at MK12 next month. Here’s their post:
Of course, this isn’t an official update, but if the studio plans to release the game within the year, they better start marketing soon. You’d think they would have teased something at the beginning of the year, but I guess it’s always been a delicate balance between announcing and releasing your game.
Maybe development isn’t sure of a release yet, and they’re still waiting to see if they would have to push the release back, hence pushing the first announcement back.
With Tekken and Street Fighter lining up for their next mainline entries, Mortal Kombat is another legacy fighting franchise that gets a fresh coat of paint every few years. We don’t know what the gameplay could be for the updated MK. Still, I hope we get a simpler cosmetic system because having to craft a move set meticulously and grind for cosmetics is not my cup of tea.
Mortal Kombat 12 is expected to release later this year. Mortal Kombat 11 is available for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4|5, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
