Not too long ago, Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski wanted to make a movie based on the critically acclaimed Bioshock game, but plans fell through and nothing came of the project. The good thing is, Netflix is willing to try one more attempt in coming to the world of Rapture.
As per The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has teamed up with original game developers Take-Two Interactive to bring to life a Bioshock movie. As of now, no director or writer is attached to the film, but the deal is said to have been in the works for almost a year.
In the world of Bioshock, players are thrust into an underwater city called Rapture, which was originally conceived as a utopia for geniuses, but quickly fell apart thanks to an addictive substance called Adam which altered the DNA of its users.
Besides the ability to shift between powers and weapons, the winning element of Bioshock has been its story, with the ideology of Ayn Rand being put front and center. This theme was even challenged when it came to the series’ third game, Bioshock Infinite, when we were given a completely different hidden city but instead of an objectivist villain, we got an antagonist that has taken control by divine rite.
The world is just so cinematic and narratively rich that a movie could be easily pulled out of it, but Verbinski was said to have butted heads with the studio when it came to budget and an R-rating. While it’s a shame we won’t get to see what Verbinski wanted to make, hopefully Netflix finds someone who can bring an adaptation that does the original game justice.
No release date has been set for Netflix’s Bioshock.
