We’ve had omnic heroes in Overwatch before, but this incoming character is different in that he’s the leader of the robot uprising Null Sector. Ramattra is set to launch on Overwatch 2 on December 6, and we have a new lore update connecting him to the game’s most popular omnic Zenyatta.
Watch this:
Lead Narrative Designer Gavin Jurgens-Fyhrie explores the complex dynamic between Ramattra and Zenyatta including how they met, why they became close, and how philosophical differences drove them down opposite paths.
Though Zenyatta usually acts as a mentor, especially for characters like Genji, it’s interesting to think that it was actually Ramattra that convinced a younger Zen to become a monk. We don’t know specifically what caused the rift between the two, but I can imagine some kind of X-Men Magneto/Prof. X relationship where they both want peace for omnics, but Zenyatta has more empathy for humans, as Ramattra is willing to use violence against violence.
Despite their backstory, I’m interested to see how the developers have made the two compatible on the playing field. A lot of Ramattra’s moves are kind of opposites of Zenyatta, and while it’s interesting to see the two go against each other, I’m wondering if they also have some kind of synergy that we’ve all yet to discover.
Ramattra launches on Overwatch 2 this coming Dec. 6. Overwatch 2 is now playable for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4|5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
