The new free-to-play model of Overwatch 2 has certainly come with its own pros and cons. While the new model did bring in a massive amount of players to the game, the new monetization model of Overwatch 2 has been leaving a lot of fans of the original a bit frustrated that they can’t work to earn any cosmetics of the game anymore. What’s news is, the development team may be addressing that change soon.
In a new update from executive producer Jared Neuss, it’s said that Overwatch 2 wll be working on giving players some more in-game rewards besides battle pass progression and competitive rank. He writes:
I could say a lot here, but I think a good place to start is saying that we aren’t completely satisfied with how everything feels right now. There’s a lot we like about it—knocking out a bunch of daily/weekly challenges or getting something new for a hero you love can feel great! But we also recognize that today’s experience has opportunity for improvement that we need to focus on.
As a short-term solution, the game is said to be changing up the rewards system to that each event can grant a special skin that you can earn by playing. There are still other rewards you can receive via other mediums like Twitch.
In the long term, developers are looking a Battle Pass changes plus ‘more interesting Challenges to pursue.’ There is also a mention of ‘play-focused progression systems’ but we don’t have much details about that yet.
Though the game is still fun, the rewards system is certainly a mess, with some players saying they actually miss the loot box mechanic. We don’t know how Blizzard plans to fix this long-term, but they definitely need to find a new way to monetize the game if cosmetics isn’t the solution.
Overwatch 2 is currently playable for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4|5, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
