Valve has often been teased for being a studio that never makes third games, but that doesn’t mean that fans can’t be hopeful. What’s interesting is, Portal writer Erik Wolpaw actually wants to push forward with a third game, but the ball is ultimately on Valve’s court.
Talking to My Perfect Console podcast (via PC Gamer) Wolpaw explained that it’s up to Valve developers to commit to making Portal 3. He explains, “In a flat structure like Valve, there is an opportunity cost to doing anything. Whatever is going on at Valve right now requires the dedication and participation of the people working on it—and it’s voluntary.”
Portal 2 had come out way back in 2011, and though the premise of the games are simple, a lot of fans have been praising its very simple, yet original gameplay loop. Even now, the fandom for Portal manages to keep things alive with multiple memes and all kinds of fanart and cosplay.
If anything, it feels like Valve is stubbornly sticking to its rule of making no more than one sequel for a game. Besides Portal, the studio is still being hounded by fans online for a third Half-Life game or a sequel for Left 4 Dead 2.
We don’t know what a third Portal game could be about, but with Wolpaw clear about moving forward, hopefully Valve would give him a chance to develop a third game.
Portal 3 has not been officially announced.
