As Rockstar continues to milk the GTA V teat dry with a new release on the way, when will GTA 6 release? According to one well-known leaker, it will be years before we’re playing GTA 6.

Rumour: GTA 6 Release is Next-Gen Only, Set in Modern Day Vice City

We all know that Rockstar is working on GTA 6 behind the scenes. What we don’t know is the setting, the characters, the platforms, or the release date. We don’t know anything about it as the Rockstar wall of silence continues to hold strong. That wall may have finally found a crack.

Tom Henderson, a “leaker” with an admittedly good track record, has put out a video on his YouTube channel where he shares some information that he alleges has been shared with him from good sources, though he admits himself that he’s not known for GTA 6 news and that everybody should take it all with a good dose of salt. Not too much, mind you – salt isn’t good for you.

GTA 6: A Modern Take on Vice City

The rumour goes that the GTA 6 setting will be a modern-day Vice City. It’s long been rumoured that the next GTA game would return to the fictional version of Miami. Again, this is just a rumour, but apparently, it will be a modern version of Vice City to accommodate GTA Online.

According to Henderson, the reason for Vice City being a modern incarnation rather than a trip back to the coke-fuelled 80s is to give the developer more wiggle room when it comes to GTA Online. Setting the game in the 80s supposedly limits what can be done with future DLC, apparently. Though, thinking about it, it doesn’t make sense; GTA V has gone full-scale ridiculous and has left reality far behind with some of its GTA Online events, so if Rockstar wanted to do anything in GTA Online for GTA 6, the developer could surely find a way. That’s what good writers are for, after all.

Furthermore, the GTA 6 online mode will supposedly feature a changing map. So with new DLCs the map will somehow change. Maybe to add new buildings? New islands? Caves? This isn’t an outlandish claim – GTA V has had a new casino added to its city (online only) and there have been some events that take place outside of Los Santos. Still, we’ll have to wait and see. Oh, and that could be quite a wait…

GTA 6 Release Date is 2025, Apparently

The wait for GTA 6 will be a long one, allegedly. Henderson says that GTA 6 isn’t expected to release for at least a few more years as Rockstar is taking its time with the sequel. In the meantime, Rockstar can comfortably continue raking in the cash from GTA V Online. Plus, GTA V is getting its third re-release on consoles this year as an “expanded and enhanced” version of the game for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Will that be enough to plug the gap between now and GTA 6? Maybe. It depends on how expanded and enhanced the next-gen version of GTA V is. Plus, there’s always the chance that Rockstar will release a GTA remaster or a GTA remake, as hinted by parent company Take-Two.

PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are to Blame for the Long Wait

Another reason for GTA 6 releasing in 2025 is that Rockstar wants to step away from the PS4 and Xbox One to bring GTA 6 to next-gen consoles and PC.

Being free of the constraints that come with developing for the PS4 and Xbox One means Rockstar can go all-out. However, right now there just aren’t that many next-gen consoles sitting in our living rooms. Rockstar is pouring cash into GTA 6 with the expectation of making a fat profit. That profit comes from sales, and if the game is only to be on next-gen and PC, the potential returns are small – at least to begin with. But by waiting a few more years, Rockstar will be able to release GTA 6 to a wider audience as the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are adopted by more players. More players means more money, and Rockstar will happily keep us waiting until the potential to make money is there. That’s why we never got any GTA game for the PS Vita – the audience wasn’t there.
