Sunset Overdrive 2 may not be impossible after all

One of the Xbox One’s best games is arguably Sunset Overdrive. The Insomniac Games-developed title scored well with critics, and was an absolute blast to play for anyone who gave it a chance. Many thought a sequel to the game was out of the question when Sony acquired Insomniac back in 2019. However, it’s sounding like that might not be the case. A Sunset Overdrive 2 could very well happen — on PlayStation, though. Sorry, Xbox fans.

Sunset Overdrive 2 may not be impossible after all

In an interview with GQ (via IGN), Insomniac’s Marcus Smith dished on the Sunset Overdrive franchise, which popped back into the news recently when Sony registered a trademark for the name.

“I mean, never say never is my approach,” Smith responded when asked if there’s “any life left” in the property. “Obviously, we’re part of Sony now, but we own the IP and so there’s nothing really stopping us other than we have lot of really exciting things in our future.”

When pressed about whether Insomniac would even want to revisit Sunset, Smith was pretty open about his desire to see another entry.

“I would,” he replied. “I think there are a lot of stories that can be told in that universe and I would love to return to it. I had a lot of fun making that game.”

Insomniac obviously has a lot going on at the moment. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is on the way and is due out next month. And it’s probably not crazy to think that the studio is working on a full-fledged sequel to PlayStation 4’s Spider-Man. It would be great to see the team there take another crack at its most underrated franchise with a Sunset Overdrive 2, though. I played through the original on Xbox One, and I would no doubt show up for another go on PS5 if given the opportunity.

Hopefully Sony gives Insomniac a chance to make it happen. In the meantime, the original Sunset Overdrive is still playable on Xbox consoles and on PC via Xbox Game Pass.
