While several games allow us to take on the roles of heroes fighting giant dragons like Monster Hunter or God of War, Nippon Ichi Software has launched a game that gives the trope a more specific storybook twist.

The game has the same aesthetic as NIS’s previous title, The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince, which came out in 2018. Though the main characters include a hero and a dragon, the game is also littered with different types of monsters—monsters that look a lot like they could fit in your pocket—pocket monsters—or Pokemon.
The trailer shows that the game is filled with all these different types of monsters that you can use for some turn-based battles. Even that ‘Rocky’ creature we meet in the trailer looks like a cross between a Pikachu and Zigzagoon.
Besides the gameplay, Cruel King and the Great Hero also have a charming storybook aesthetic. Hopefully, it comes with a meaningful story.
The Cruel King and the Great Hero is now available for PS4 and Nintendo Switch.
