The Last of Us Part 3 is not currently in development. But should the game be given the green light sometime in the future then its writing team are ready. That’s because the outline has already been written and is awaiting the next stage of production. But will it ever become something more substantial than a stack of papers? That’s doubtful, according to reports.

The Last of Us Part 3 Is Outlined and Ready For the Green Light

Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross have already planned The Last of Us Part 3, with the story’s outline completed and ready for further fleshing out. However, there are currently no (public) plans to develop another instalment in the series. Neither is it secretly in production, according to Druckmann himself. So, will a third part of the story ever be made?
I’d be really surprised if it wasn’t.

After all, this is one of the most infamous games to exist and is synonymous with the console – two reasons alone that make this a sure bestseller. But then again, Sony may want to branch out with new intellectual property; shake things up a little. And the demand on both time and talent that such a sequel would require may prevent it from doing just that.
But let’s get back to the main story.
The co-writer stated to the Script Apart Podcast that the pair had written “an outline for a story, that we’re not making – but I hope one day can see the light of day – that explores a little bit what happens after this game“. Discussion then strayed on to the matter of internal debates on whether their next project is going to be another The Last of Us or something else, saying:

“After we finish one of our big titles, we take a long time to explore different ideas, whether it’s going to be Last of Us III, whether it’s something new, whether there’s some old franchise we want to go back to.

“I like to fully explore all of those, then look at, like: okay, we have all of these ideas in front of us. As a studio, what do we want to commit to?”

Then things are further confounded by the recent speculation of a PlayStation 5 native remake for the original game and a potential multiplayer game, too. So, we really are none the wiser – except for knowing they have given the idea a bit more than a passing thought. Now we just have to wait and see if the ink is translated into code…
