J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings franchise is slowly creeping back to the mainstream, and next year we’ll be getting a game focused on the trilogy’s favorite anti-hero Gollum.
The game is now set to release in 2023, and we have a new story trailer featuring Gollum as well as some familiar faces like Gandalf and Thranduil. Check this out:
Here’s the official description:
Discover Daedalic’s untold story through a trailer featuring Gollum’s extraordinary adventure in search of his Precious. This original story will take you to several places through Middle-earth where you’ll meet well-known characters from the books of J.R.R. Tolkien.
Besides Gollum, we can see that there are a lot of returns to familiar locations from Middle-earth. Not only do we get to roam around the Mirkwood a.k.a. the realm of King Thranduil, but we also have a new take on Mordor and the Eye of Sauron; we also find out about how Gollum knows all about the giant spider Shelob.
It also looks like the game is going to be giving Gollum some new companions in the form of an elf maiden. Though we know how Gollum’s journey ends in Return of the King, it’s always interesting to watch the push and pull of his morality between Smeagol and Gollum.
Who knows, maybe Daedalic could be thinking of making an alternate ending for Gollum that’s more on the light side of things. Until the game releases though, all we can do is guess.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum comes to Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation 4|5, and PC sometime in 2023.
