How to Get Clay in Stardew Valley

There are multiple sources of Clay, and some are more reliable than others. Depending on the season, we’ll list them all so you can take advantage of them. Make sure to keep on reading to learn about the details and strategize your resources appropriately.

What Is Clay in Stardew Valley?

Clay is a common resource and material in the game. You need it for crafting specific items or building a Silo. It’s easy to gather; however, you need plenty of it for crafting recipes.

The crafting recipes that call for Clay are:

  • Quality Retaining Soil
  • Garden Pot
  • Brick Floor
  • Fiber Seeds
  • Deluxe Retaining Soil
  • Bone Mill

While these recipes only require three at most, you’ll likely need to craft them many times. As for the Silo, you need 10 Clay each.

Getting Clay in Stardew Valley

There are five ways to get clay in Stardew Valley, ranging from digging in the dirt around you to giving it as a gift. Keep reading to find out the best ones to rely on for consistent Clay resources.

  • Digging up the dirt

If you have a hoe, you can pick some patches of ground to till. It can be farmland or other environments, as long as you’re not using the patch for crops. Doing so can yield some clay, though it’s still not the best method.

  • Digging at the beach

The beach gives you more Clay if you till the sand with a hoe. Clay isn’t guaranteed if you dig at the beach, but you likely won’t plant crops there, so there’s more ground to cover.

  • Digging at spots with worms or twigs

These spots don’t boast incredible clay drop rates but yield two or three Clays simultaneously. Digging these spots is much better than the previous two, though finding them can take some time.

  • Mining Geodes

Levels 1 to 39 of the mines are the best sources of standard Geodes. Gather them and head to Clint, the blacksmith. His shop is on the east side of town and opens from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Once you visit him, you can spend 25 gold to crack each Geode open. Each Geode has a chance of containing Clay. However, there are also many other rewards, some of which can be valuable.

Make sure you have enough money to open the Geodes, as you might burn through your cash quickly this way. Out of all the five ways to get Clay, this is the best one.

  • Get Clay as a gift

During the Feast of the Winter Star, Jas and Vincent can give you some Clay. This feast is celebrated on Winter 25 and lasts from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in town. Getting Clay this way only works if the feast is approaching, as you can always mine and dig it up yourself.

Due to the yearly nature of the feast, we don’t recommend actively using this method. It’s better to rely on mining Geodes, which are much more consistent.

I Need Some Good Soil

The best use of Clay is to craft the many items in the game. In particular, you’ll find yourself making Deluxe Retaining Soil and Silos often. Mining Clay isn’t simply about gathering resources, though. If you’re lucky, you might also get some minerals and gems.
