If you’ve been looking forward to the game that used to be called Rainbow Six Quarantine, we have some good news for you: the game has dropped that q-word in favor of something else. Not only that, but today during the Ubisoft Forward stream, we got a Rainbow Six Extraction release date, along with some footage of what the gameplay loop is like.

Rainbow Six Extraction release date: Jan 20, 2022

And yes, that is the name: Rainbow Six Extraction. Because you’re going into a quarantine zone to extract things. And oops — I said the q-word.

Now, let’s cover what you need to know about extraction.

The Rainbow Six Extraction release date is Jan. 20, 2022

Yes, we know — it’s in the title already. But we’re giving this its own section once more to highlight something we’d initially noticed with a bunch of the E3 games announced. Over the past few years, we thought there was a paradigm shift. We thought maybe companies were letting go of the need to release their big games in the fall. That’s when Rainbow Six Extraction was originally supposed to release, so it seemed Ubi was trying to pack that season to the brim.

And then: a delay. Rainbow Six Extraction got bumped to Jan. 20, 2022. And hey — the world didn’t end! We’ll still get to play the game and it didn’t have to release during the busiest time of the year. That sounds like a win for Ubisoft and for the dev team.

Rainbow Six Extraction is basically Rainbow Six Siege, but with no PvP, and aliens

The same tactics you’d use in a match of Rainbow Six Siege — infiltrate quietly, catch your enemies by surprise, and eliminate them — come into play in Extraction. The difference is that, this time, you aren’t facing off against other players. Instead, you’re entering a quarantine zone to take out an alien species. You and your squad will have to work together in order to exterminate the aliens without suffering any losses. And if a teammate gets grabbed? They’ll be M.I.A., and you’ll have to stage a rescue op to get them back.

I really want to give this game a fair shake. I think I could enjoy it. With that said, my opinion may not match up with yours. I can’t help but feel like this is primarily going to take place in super close quarters, and if you prefer your games a little more open — say, if you’re claustrophobic — that may not sit well with you.

I’ve enjoyed Rainbow Six games in the past, and this one is putting an interesting new spin on the franchise. I like to see teams take some chances instead of sticking to the same old, same old, so I’ll be there, ready to play Extraction on Sept. 16, 2021 with no bells on. Because you have to be quiet. What about you? How does Extraction look to you, dear player? Let me know your thoughts.
