Though PlayStation has been leading in the industry when it comes to exclusives, Xbox has managed to gain an advantage with its backwards compatibility and Game Pass library. Rumor has been going around that PlayStation is working on their own version of the Game Pass with something called ‘Project Spartacus’, and we may have just gotten some new details about the project.

Project Spartacus: PlayStation’s Game Pass Rival will Allegedly Depend on ‘Classic’ PS Titles

Talking on his show Grubbsnax (via VGC), insider Jeff Grubb has talked about how PlayStation’s upcoming Game Pass rival will lean heavily on ‘classic’ titles. He explains,“I don’t know what classic games means, but I do know that it’s a major part of this premium tier. So you have game trials, classic games and streaming on this premium tier”.

Like I said, the Series X has been praised for being able to play titles from way back into the Xbox’s first iteration. As for the PS5, it can only go back to PS4 games—and that’s only for a select few titles as well.

We don’t have any official details for Project Spartacus right now, but it would definitely be a huge improvement when it comes to PlayStation building their game library. Though it has been the norm to throw out the old console and its games whenever a new piece of hardware comes out, Microsoft has really done some forward thinking by allowing their players to actually keep their entire libraries relevant.

We don’t know when Spartacus will officially be unveiled, but Grubb does suggest, “It’s probably getting pretty close to this actually launching, something’s probably going to happen by the end of this month and I don’t think that necessarily means publicly, I think in terms of the internal milestone of where the service needs to be.”

We’ll just have to wait and see.
