The Prince of Persia franchise was one of the titles that defined the PS2/Xbox console generation, and the title got so popular that it even spawned a movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal. A remake had been announced years ago with the latest release date set for this year, but now it looks like the game has caught another snag.
As per the official Prince of Persia account, the game will now be moving on from its announced studio Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, and moving over to Ubisoft Montreal—the original studio that made Prince of Persia. Here’s the announcement:
The remake was first announced in September 2020 with releases pushed back to January then March of 2021. Of course, the game didn’t come out last year at all, and though it was now set to come out this year, the change in studios could mean that the game could release even further down the line.
For a game about time-traveling, it sure has been taking a whole to actually release.
We don’t know specifically why Ubisoft Montreal decided to take over, but some fans are speculating that the devs in past studios simply weren’t up to snuff. Prince of Persia was a major gaming IP back in the early 2000s, and this remake could be a potential relaunch of the title for a new audience—no wonder they want it to be perfect.
I would rather we don’t have to wait too long, but that’s all we can really do until we get the next big reveal. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is yet to receive a new release date.
