The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are ready to come back to the big screen this August, but one TMNT property managed to turn everyone’s heads back in 2020 with The Last Ronin.

TMNT: The Last Ronin Getting a Game Adaptation Inspired by God of War

According to Polygon, Paramount Global gaming VP Doug Rosen has confirmed that there will be an upcoming adaptation of The Last Ronin, and it will be a third-person action game not unlike PlayStation’s recent God of War titles.

In The Last Ronin, we enter a battle-ravaged future where only one turtle survived an ambush from the Foot Clan that ended up killing Splinter and the three other turtles. The ronin wears a black mask, and uses all the signature weapons of the TMNT.

I won’t spoil who the identity of the Last Ronin is, but the set-up does offer a lot of gameplay potential, with four choices of weapons and a futuristic New York City to roam around in.

With the recent success of Shredder’s Revenge and the upcoming movie, a AAA TMNT game does seem like a safe gamble. The Last Ronin managed to generate so much hype when it came out originally, and a lot of fans love the story. Admittedly, we have yet to get a AAA Turtles game that lives up to the hype, but with the setting of Ronin, they can pretty much make an Arkham game which will have players roaming the streets looking for justice.

Let’s just hope it ends up more like Arkham City rather than Gotham Knights.

No release date has been set for The Last Ronin, but you can catch the TMNT in Mutant Mayhem which hits theaters this August.
