With a free-to-play game like Overwatch 2, the most valuable things are considered cosmetics. The rarer they are to obtain, the more valuable they become.
One such coveted skin is Genji’s Oni Skin, which has been available since Overwatch 1, so how can you acquire it?
The Nexus Challenge
Unlike many other skins, the skin results from a crossover promotional event with Heroes of the Storm. HOTS launched the Nexus Challenge, allowing players to unlock the Oni skin via gameplay.
Playing 15 Heroes of the Storm games would get players Genji’s Oni skin (plus an avatar and spray). It also unlocks Zarya as a playable hero in HOTS.

How Can I Unlock the Genji Oni Skin?
The only way to access Genji’s Oni skin in Overwatch 2 is by unlocking it in Overwatch 1. Players who had already won the skin when the Nexus Challenge first launched will be able to port over the skin to Overwatch 2 via their Battle.net accounts.
As for unlocking the skin for new players, the Nexus Challenge is currently closed, and the challenge is no longer active. The only other way to unlock the skin was via a loot box drop, and that system isn’t in place anymore.
There’s Hope
Though there are no methods to unlock the skin in the game, Overwatch has a history of making seasonal and limited skins available during their Anniversary Events. With Overwatch 2’s Anniversary coming this October, it’s possible that Blizzard could make several skins available during that day, and maybe it would be possible to unlock the Oni skin.
Of course, nothing official has been confirmed, but if the asset exists in the game and there’s fan demand for it, it would make sense for Overwatch 2 to make it available. Gamers will just have to wait and see.
