How to Get Golden Keys in Borderlands 3

In Borderlands 3, your ability to get Golden Keys and a Golden Chest for some sweet loot is very limited. In fact, you can’t get any keys by playing the game normally. Players are drip-fed some Golden Key codes every now and again, but this is not nearly enough for the enormous equipment demands. If you want to get more Golden Keys (perhaps even an unlimited supply), look no further. We’ve got everything you need to get as many Golden Keys in Borderlands 3 as you want.

Getting Golden Keys in Borderlands 3

As you might have already guessed just by playing the game, Golden Keys are incredibly popular and remarkably scarce. You won’t encounter a single key throughout the entire game. The only way to get some Golden Keys is to use SHiFT codes provided by the game developer. Each SHiFT code is a 25-character alphanumeric string. These codes are typically single-use and won’t give you more than a few keys at a time. Some codes can expire over time, but others surface periodically on social media or in players’ inboxes to make up for it.

Here are some SHiFT codes for Golden Keys that shouldn’t expire:

  • ZFKJ3-TT3BB-JTBJT-T3JJT-JWX9H gives three keys
  • Z65B3-JCXX6-5JXW3-3B33J-9SWT6

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Launch the game. You need to have reached “Sanctuary III” in-game to start this method.
  2. Go to “Account,” then “SHiFT code” sections.
  3. Redeem the SHiFT codes above. Just copy the entire string, as it should fill all the boxes neatly, then select “SUBMIT.”
  4. Once you’ve redeemed a code, you’ll receive a message in your Mailbox to claim the keys. Don’t do that yet.
  5. Go to the “Mailbox” tab in the same section.
  6. Disconnect your device from the internet. You can do that whatever way you like. Just ensure that you don’t have any connections running.
  7. Go into the Mailbox, then claim one key for testing.
  8. Restart the game.
  9. Go back to the Mailbox. You should have the key(s) you already claimed available for claiming, which allows you to claim the keys again. You can start claiming all the keys you can.
  10. Repeat Steps 8 and 9. Do this until you have whatever number of keys you prefer. On the last run-through, keep the keys unclaimed for future use.
  11. Reconnect your device to the internet.

Unfortunately, if you’ve already claimed the keys from all available SHiFT codes, you won’t be able to enter them into the game again. The only option left is to wait until the developer or publisher post more keys online.

Apart from this “hack,” which doesn’t seem to be getting patched away any time soon, there are no ways to get more than a few Golden Keys at a time in Borderlands 3. The previous installments in the franchise limited the Golden Chest to give out mostly only passable equipment unless you had the GOTY Enhanced editions. In Borderlands 3, however, your chances increase of getting a legendary weapon from opening the Golden Chest, making Golden Keys more valuable than before.

Keys of Gold Await

We hope you have fun opening the Golden Chest to your heart’s content after getting as many Golden Keys as you like. While the chances of getting legendary equipment from each one are slim, you’ve already paid for the game, so why should you be stopped from getting some loot? The other option is to earn the weapons by playing the game, but that might take a bit too much time.
