With the success of last year’s Dune film, Funcom and Shiro Games had announced that they would be developing a Dune game at the Game Awards. While we don’t have a solid release date for Dune: Spice Wars yet, we do have an early access date—plus the reveal of a new faction.
As per the official announcement, early access for Dune: Spice Wars will be on April 26. The game is said to be available for early access for a few months; hopefully it can launch within the year or early next year.
As for the new faction announced, players will get access to the Fremen—the local inhabitants of Arrakis led by Dr. Liet Kynes. Other characters in the faction include Chani Kynes, Stilgar Ben Fifrawi, Mother Ramallo, and Otheym—all of which have different abilities that they all bring to the table.
The Fremen will be the final faction of the four that will be available at launch. The other factions that we know are in the game are House Atreides, House Harkonnen, and the Smugglers. It’s odd that the Fremen should be announced last, seeing that Arrakis is their homeworld. You’d think they would announce them before we got the Smuggler faction at least.
Here’s the main description of the Fremen:
Arising from and forged by the desert, the Fremen are less affected by the environment. They can travel further before suffering from exhaustion or attracting the sandworms. Better yet, they can use the terrible beast to travel faster and strike suddenly at the heart of their opponent’s domain. Experts in stealth tactics, they can also lay devastating ambushes on their opponents’ armies, or hide inside the dreadful sandstorms of Arrakis to surprise weakened, unsuspecting victims.
