It’s safe to say that Elden Ring was, up until today, the white whale for a lot of gamers who simply want to know when they can play the thing they’re looking forward to. We’ve known about the game since E3 2019 — the last normal E3 we had. Roughly two years later, Bandai Namco and FromSoftware finally showed off a little bit of the game, and also gave fans that highly sought-after Elden Ring release date.
According to the trailer shown during Summer Game Fest, Elden Ring is scheduled to release on Jan. 21, 2022. The game is expected to ship on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC (Steam).
In terms of gameplay, it looks like more of what we’ve gotten previously out of FromSoftware, which is certainly not a bad thing by any stretch. You can probably expect an action RPG in a fantasy setting — though how difficult the game will be remains to be seen. Are we talking Souls difficulty here, or — perhaps because this project is hugely mainstream thanks to the George R.R. Martin connection — something a bit more approachable?
A few PlayStation 4 and Xbox One store listings are up for the game right now, though sadly, these don’t shed light on any additional story details. It looks like you’ll have to be satisfied with your Elden Ring release date until more is revealed about the title in the future.
