Pokemon Legends: Arceus is set in olden times in the Pokemon world when it was rare to find harmony between people and Pokemon. Set in Hisui, modern-day Sinnoh, you will join the Galaxy Expedition Team (Galaxy Team for short) as a member of the Survey Corps stationed in Jubilife Village. You will be tasked to meet every Hisui Pokemon species to complete the region’s first-ever Pokédex.

How to Evolve Onix into Steelix in Pokemon Legends: Arceus

In the game, there are certain Pokemon that players cannot catch or are hard to catch in the wild. One of the methods to acquire these Pokemon is through evolution. One of these Pokemon is Steelix, and in this guide, you will learn how to evolve Onix into a Steelix!

Onix into Steelix

Steelix is a Steel and Ground-type Iron-Snake Pokemon with a long, silvery-gray, snake-like body with rock-like sections with rock spikes coming out of three sections and a huge head with a wide jaw and huge square teeth. According to its Pokedex entry in the game, Steelix’s body is coated with steel powder, and its body is so hard that not even a diamond can leave so much as a scratch on it.

Alpha Steelix can be found in the area mentioned at all times of the day and in every weather condition. Steelix can be found in Celestica Trail in the Coronet Highlands, and the Steelix that can be found here is an Alpha Pokemon. Aside from that, Steelix can also be found in Massive Mass Outbreaks in the Crimson Mirelands and the Cobalt Coastlands.

However, if you would instead obtain a Steelix through evolution, the player can catch one by evolving an Onix using a Metal Coat. To do that, the player must first know where to find an Onix.

Onix

The player can find an Onix in the Crimson Mirelands (in Scarlet Bog, north of Balderoll Slope, and east of Lake Valor) and in the Coronet Highlands (in Celestica Trail). Onix can be found in these locations at all times of the day and in every weather condition. It is worth mentioning that the Onix that can be found north of Balderoll Slope is an Alpha Pokemon. Aside from that, Onix may also be found in Massive Mass Outbreaks in the Crimson Mirelands and the Cobalt Coastlands.

If you plan on distracting it with food before catching it, it is worth mentioning that Onix’s preferred foods are Crunchy Salts.

Suppose you plan on battling an Onix first before catching it. In that case, it is worth noting that, as mentioned, Onix is a Rock and Ground-type Pokemon, which means it has a weakness in Fighting-type, Ground-type, Ice-type, Steel-type, and especially Grass-type and Water-type moves (super effective), a resistance to Fire-type, Flying-type, Normal-type, Rock-type, and especially Poison-type moves (not very effective), and immunity to Electric-type moves (no effect).

Metal Coat

Now that the player has caught an Onix, all that is needed to evolve an Onix to Steelix is a Metal Coat. There are several ways that the player can obtain a Metal Coat:

The player may obtain Metal Coat after defeating or catching certain Pokemon, specifically Magnemite, Magneton, and Magnezone.

The player can purchase a Metal Coat for 8,000 Pokemon Dollars from Ginter at the Gingko Guild Shop between the Galaxy Hall and the player’s headquarters. However, Ginter will call it a Metallic Spread. Unfortunately, the items the Gingko Guild Merchants sell are not the same, so the purchasable items may vary. To change the items that Ginter is selling, the player must first catch 20 Pokemon.

The player can purchase a Metal Coat from the Trading Post near the Training Grounds for only 1000 Merit Points. The player can earn Merit Points by returning lost satchels all over the Hisui region.

Other than that, the player may find some Metal Coats on the ground inside of Space-Time Distortions, so check out the items inside them.

Out of all the methods mentioned above, the easiest way to obtain a Metal Coat is by purchasing one from the Trading Post for 1000 Merit Points.

Finally, Steelix!

After catching an Onix and obtaining a Metal Coat, the player can now evolve an Onix into a Steelix!

To do that, this is what the player must do:

  1. Put the player’s Onix in the Player’s party by talking to the Galaxy Member near the tent on any of the Base Camps, selecting “I want to see my Pokemon” on the prompt, or heading to the Pastures in the eastern part of Jubilife Village.
  2. Then, ensure that the Metal Coat is in the player’s Satchel. If not, the player can access the Item Storage in any of the Base Camps or the Item Storage near the Front Gate in the northeastern part of Jubilife City and move the Metal Coat to the player’s Satchel.
  3. Afterward, return to the game and press the up directional button to open the player’s Satchel.
  4. Select the Metal Coat, select “Use” on the prompt, then select Onix from the player’s party to use the Metal Coat on Onix.
  5. Confirm on the prompt to evolve Onix. Then, just like that, Onix will evolve into a Steelix!

Now that the player has a Steelix, the player can try to use the Steelix to complete other requests, missions, or Arceus’ task for the player, which is to catch ’em all!
