Team Cherry’s Metroidvania action-adventure game, Hollow Knight, follows the journey of a nameless warrior called the Knight as he travels through Hallownest, which is now a kingdom in ruins because of a supernatural disease. As the Knight journeys through Hallownest, he can unlock new abilities, spells, and charms that will help him traverse through different areas of Hallownest and defeat enemies.

One of the useful spells in the game is the Howling Wraiths spell. This spell allows the Knight to release a blast of Soul above and around the Knight. With the Howling Wraith spell, the Knight will have a new way of defeating enemies in Hallownest, and in this guide, you will learn how to obtain the Howling Wraiths spell!

Location

The Howling Wraiths spell can be found in the easternmost part of the room inside the Overgrown Mound, on the western side of the Fog Canyon.

In the Fog Canyon, the Knight will encounter different kinds of enemies like Uomas, Oomas, and Charged Lumaflies. Additionally, in the Overgrown Mound, the Knight will encounter a lot of Squits and some Mossflies.

So the Knight will be able to traverse Fog Canyon more easily, it is recommended that the Knight should have the Monarch Wings ability, which allows the Knight to perform a double jump in mid-air, and the Mantis Claw ability, which enables the Knight to cling to walls and jump off of them, and the Isma’s Tear ability, which allows the Knight to swim in pools of acid without taking any damage. With these abilities, obtaining the Howling Wraiths spell is very easy. 

To obtain the Howling Wraiths spell, this is what the Knight must do:

1. Starting from the Queen’s Station Stagway Bench, take the exit on the right, jump up the platforms, head to the top, and take the exit on the left.
   
2. The Knight has now arrived in Fog Canyon. Head to the very top of the room and take the exit on the left. In this room, the Knight will encounter a lot of Uomas and Oomas. Be careful when attacking Oomas; it will pop its shell, and its orange core will explode on the Knight.
   
3. Next, the Knight will encounter much more of Uomas and Oomas. Head to the shaft’s middle part and take the left exit.
   
4. In this next room, the Knight will encounter a lot of Charged Lumaflies and a pool of acid below. Head to the left, pass through the large platform with spikes on it and all the Charged Lumaflies and take the exit on the left at the end of the room. It is worth noting that with Isma’s Tear ability, the Knight can swim in the acid below to pass through all the Charged Lumaflies and spikes without damage.
   
5. Next, head to the left, head up the next shaft, continue to the left, and drop down on the following path. There, you will find the entrance to the Overgrown Mound and a couple of Mossflies. Enter the Overgrown Mound to continue. Another thing worth noting is that the Knight can destroy the wooden bracing on the right to create a shortcut to the entrance of the Overgrown Mound.
   
6. Afterward, head to the right, where you will encounter two Squits. Then, the Knight will eventually reach a large part of the room with small platforms in the middle and spikes at the bottom. Upon trying to exit this part of the room through the path on the top right, the pathway to continue and the pathway back will be closed, and to continue, the Knight must first defeat all the Squits in the room.
   
7. After defeating all the Squits, the pathway to continue will be opened. Head to the right, where the Knight will encounter another Squit (it is worth mentioning that there is a Geo Deposit that another Squit guards at the end of this path), head down on the next path, head to the left, and you will find what looks like a spirit right next to a snail shaman’s corpse. Jump towards the spirit, and the Knight will obtain the Howling Wraiths spell!

As mentioned above, the Howling Wraiths spell allows the Knight to release a blast of Soul above and around the Knight. Press the assigned FOCUS or CAST button to perform it while holding the UP movement button. The wave of energy released will be in an arc above and around the Knight, which deals three hits.

The Howling Wraiths spell is six times the strength of the Old Nail, and If all three hits make contact with an enemy, the damage dealt is twice as much as the damage dealt by the Vengeful Spirit spell. Like casting the Vengeful Spirit spell, the Knight will stall in mid-air if the Howling Wraiths spell is performed mid-air.

Equipping certain Charms can help increase the damage output of spells like the Shaman Stone charm, which increases the damage output of the Howling Wraith spell by almost 50%. Additionally, equipping the Spell Twister charm lowers the cost of Soul to cast the Howling Wraiths spell.
