Killing the Toll Collector in Baldur’s Gate 3 is easier.
Reithwin Town is an area you will eventually explore in Act 2 in Baldur’s Gate 3 and is where you’ll find the Tollhouse – home to a powerful monster called the Toll Collector, who will demand Gold as payment for crossing the river.
Unfortunately, no amount of Gold will be enough for the Toll Collector; you’ll quickly waste precious Gold, but you still won’t get past her at the Tollhouse. In this case, your only option is to kill the Toll Collector, but how do you kill such a powerful monster?
In this guide, we will walk you through some ways you can kill the Toll Collector in Baldur’s Gate 3.
How do you kill the Toll Collector in Baldur’s Gate 3?
There are two ways to kill the Toll Collector in Baldur’s Gate 3 – you can reduce her HP significantly by killing Visages within the Tollhouse or use a party member with high Charisma to reason out with her and cause her to die instantly.
The Toll Collector has some of the highest HP pools of any boss in the game (600 HP approx.) and can easily one-shot any of your party members with her Burst skills, especially if they have a ton of Gold with them. Her Visages are also very deadly and can deal a ton of AoE damage in the fight, and she can also summon halberds to help her fight, making the whole engagement a nightmare for even the toughest parties.
You can kill the Toll Collector by dealing high damage to her using an OP class. Check out our guide, What is the Most OP Class in Baldur’s Gate 3? to find out which class can deal the most damage to the Toll Collector. Remember that the Toll Collector can still easily wipe your party clean off the Tollhouse if you do not opt for the methods outlined below.
Cheesing your way through the Toll Collector will still be your best option. Below are a few tricks you can try and use to kill the Toll Collector in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Reduce the Toll Collector’s HP
As mentioned, the Toll Collector has an absurd amount of HP at around 600. Not even your most powerful party members will leave a dent in the powerful monster’s HP pool, especially when the Toll Collector can retaliate and kill any of your party members in one move.
The key to successfully killing the Toll Collector is reducing her max HP. You can do this by killing the Visages floating around the Tollhouse, as each Visage you kill will reduce the Toll Keeper’s max HP by around 100. However, you must make sure you kill the Visages using stealth attacks, as attacking any of the Visages outright will instantly start an engagement with the Toll Collector.
You can sneak around the Tollhouse more easily by using just one character, so leave the rest of your party members outside the Tollhouse, then sneak in and kill all the Visages using stealth attacks. After you kill all the Visages, you can engage the Toll Collector and one-shot her, as she will only have around 15 HP.
Make the Toll Collector Kill Herself
Another way you can kill the Toll Collector is by reasoning with her and making her realize the futility of her duty. If you pick the right responses in your interaction with her, the Toll Collector will instantly save you the trouble and kill herself.
Choose the following dialogue responses to force the Toll Collect to kill herself.
- Who are you?
- If I give you gold, what do I get in return?
- Toss the creature a gold piece.
- I don’t hand out so much gold for so little in return.
- I’ve already paid.
- [PERSUSION] Why stay in this rotted building? Take your gold and be free.
- [PERSUASION] Says who? Seems to me there’s no one here to oversee you.
Note: You will need a character with high Charisma to convince the Toll Collector successfully.
Where to Find the Toll Collector in Baldur’s Gate 3
You can find the Toll Collector at the Tollhouse, southwest of Reithwin Town, in Baldur’s Gate 3. Head toward the cemetery area near the road leading to the Moonrise Towers, and you should be able to find the Tollhouse where the Toll Collector resides.
Enter the Tollhouse and head toward the second floor, and you should find the Toll Collector, Gerringothe Thorm. You will need to deal with the Toll Collector to cross the river.
How to Get the Penny Pincher Trophy
You can unlock the Penny Pincher Trophy by beating the Toll Collector without engaging her in combat. The only way to do this is by picking a specific set of responses in your interaction with the Toll Collector, which will cause her to kill herself.
Choose the following responses in your conversation with the Toll Collector to get the Penny Pincher Trophy.
What to do with the Toll Collector Key in Baldur’s Gate 3
The Toll Collector’s Key can access the Tollhouse Master’s Office. Inside the Tollhouse Master’s Office, you’ll find a Heavy Chest that contains an Ironvine Shield.
Also within the Tollhouse Master’s Office are some rotten boards you can destroy to find loot, such as scrolls and arrows. Use your party member’s Perception to check and find the rotten boards. Jump down the secret area, then check all the chests and drawers for Gold.
After you loot the secret area, use Perception again to find the button that lets you escape the room afterward.
Final Thoughts
Winning against Toll Collector through traditional combat is almost impossible due to the boss’ insane HP pool and powerful Gold-charged attacks. With that said, you can use a few methods to make the fight against the Toll Collector much easier, such as killing Visages to reduce her total HP or strategically choosing dialogue options to cause her to kill herself.
