How To Unlock the Secret Character in Risk of Rain Returns

Risk of Rain Returns’ roster comprises 14 unique Survivors, each with strengths, weaknesses, and abilities. While you can only choose between the Commando or the Huntress at the start of the game, you can quickly add a few more Survivors to your playable roster by completing a couple of runs and gaining achievements.

However, unbeknownst to many, Risk of Rain Returns’ roster count doesn’t top out at 14 – it goes to 15 if you include the unlockable secret character, Robomando.

This quick guide will walk you through the steps to unlock the secret character in Risk of Rain Returns.

How do you unlock the Robomando in Risk of Rain Returns?

Unlocking the secret character in Risk of Rain Returns is no easy task – you must follow a convoluted list of steps to unlock the Robomando. Check out the prerequisites below for a quick idea of what it takes to unlock the Robomando.

  1. Start a run on Drizzle with any character.
  2. Reach the 5th Stage (Temple of the Elders) in Drizzle and look for a Clay Pot on the leftmost or rightmost edge of the map.
  3. Acquire the Strange Battery
  4. Enter the Final Stage.
  5. In the Final Stage, look for a hidden area with the golems underneath the front of the ship.
  6. Walk past the golems and through the wall to reach the secret area toward the left.
  7. Place the Strange Battery in the Chest.
  8. Beat Providence
  9. Start a new run on Rainstorm or Monsoon.
  10. Reach Stage 2 and look for the hidden chest.
  11. Re-acquire the Strange Battery.
  12. Reach Stage 3 and wait until the 22-minute mark before activating the teleporter.
  13. Look for Robotmando in the next Stage.
  14. Use the Strange Battery to reboot Robomando.
  15. Engage in a fight with Robomando but die to him.
  16. Claim Robomando.

Step 1: Acquiring the Strange Battery

Your first order of business in unlocking the Robomando is acquiring the Strange Battery. Start by going on a new run using any character. Make sure you pick Drizzle, as this is where you’ll find the Strange Battery – an item you’ll need to reboot the Robomando later.

Run through Drizzle like you would with any other normal run in Risk of Rain Returns. Try your best to reach Stage 5, as it is here where you can find and acquire the Strange Battery.

In Stage 5, head to the leftmost or rightmost end of the map, where you’ll find a small ledge with a brown Clay Pot. Break the Clay Pot and collect the Strange Battery. Continue the run to reach the Final Stage.

In the Final Stage, head to the front of the ship. Drop down the edge and hug the wall until you find a small opening with golems inside it. Enter the area, then walk past the golems and through the wall to find a secret container. Place the Strange Battery in the container, then continue your run and beat Providence.

Step 2: Re-acquiring the Strange Battery

After you beat Providence, start a new run with any character on the Rainstorm or Monsoon difficulty. Before you start your run, reduce the Damage Taken slider to 10% and raise the Damage Dealt to 200%.

Start the new run on Rainstorm or Monsoon and run through Stage 1 normally. The goal is to reach Stage 2, where you’ll find the same container you found in the Final Stage. Unlock the container to re-acquire the Strange Battery. Run through the rest of Stage 2 to reach Stage 3.

Step 3: Locating the Secret Character

Things get a bit tricky in Stage 3. You’ll need to clear the entire stage and wait until the 22-minute mark before activating the Teleporter. Make sure you kill the stage boss first before waiting for the 22-minute mark so you can wait in peace.

Stand next to the Teleporter before the timer reaches the 22-minute mark and activate it at exactly 22:00. Make sure you time it perfectly, or you will fail the process.

Step 4: Revive the Secret Risk of Rain Returns Character

In the next stage, look for Robomando on the bottom leftmost side of the map. Then, use the Strange Battery to reboot him.

You will have to fight him here, but you’ll likely end up dead. Don’t worry! Dying is something you would want to happen here, as the run ends after you die, but you will unlock and acquire him as a new Survivor at the run summary screen.

Final Thoughts

Unlocking Robomando in Risk of Rain Returns will realistically take a few runs since the list of requirements you must meet to get the secret character is quite long. Nevertheless, unlocking the character should be very doable, and your run should be much easier in the second half, as you can make the run much more manageable by using the Damage sliders before the start of the run.

Follow the steps outlined above, and you should be able to add the secret character Robomando to your roster in Risk of Rain Returns.
