The player is the only one who can make decisions in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: disbanding the evil Team Star is one option, as is learning about the new Titan Pokemon, catching every Pokemon to complete the Pokedex, or destroying every Pokemon Gym to become the Champion and the best like no one ever was.
Even after all that is finished, the player can still finish many tasks in the post-game. To ask for a rematch at every Pokemon Gym is one of them.
This guide will teach you everything you need to know for your rematch against Larry, Medali’s Gym Leader! Consider this your spoiler alert for the main story ending of the game!
The Beginning of the Post Game
Once “The Way Home,” the game’s final main quest, and the credits roll have been completed, the player will be returned to their dorm room and called to Director Clavell’s office. Leave the dormitory room, then select “Director’s Office” from the menu.
Penny, Nemona, Arven, and the player will be addressed by Director Clavell, who claims he is not angry but would like to talk about their success in stopping the time machine, which managed to stop the ancient/future Pokemon from destroying the Paldea region’s ecosystem.
Also mentioned by Director Clavell is his willingness to overlook that they were coerced into going into a prohibited area. The player will then receive a Master Ball from Director Clavell.
Nemona will eventually propose holding a Pokemon battle at the academy to celebrate the player becoming a Champion after a few brief exchanges.
Top Champion Geeta will then enter the room and declare that the Pokemon League is happy to help plan this competition before suggesting that faculty and students compete for the title of the strongest trainer at the academy because everyone has the potential to be the best.
Top Champion Geeta will then decline to participate unless the player helps her with her work. When the player responds “I’d be delighted to help!” to the prompt, Top Champion Geeta will ask the player to inspect all of the Pokemon Gyms in the Paldea region on her behalf so they can continue to be a source of strength and inspiration for anyone aspiring to the Champion Rank.
She will say that the player can do this by approaching each Pokemon Gym Leader with their full force as a Champion and putting them to battle. Afterward, Top Champion Geeta and Penny will leave to finish some tasks.
The player can then issue a new challenge to the Pokemon Gym Leaders shortly after that!
Medali Gym: Rematch!
Gym Leader Larry is found inside the Medali Gym building, located in the northern part of Medali (northeast of Cascarrafa and the Asado Desert or southwest of Glaseado Mountain) directly northwest of the Great Crater of Paldea.
The player can reach Medali by following the main path northeast of Porto Marinada through West Province (Area Two) and West Province (Area Three).
Upon entering the Medali Gym building, approach Gym Leader Larry near the receptionist, and he will say it is time for a meeting with Top Champion Geeta. Still, instead, he now has a visitor that has no appointment.
He will then continue that he understands what is happening as it is something that Top Champion Geeta would do.
Select any of the responses on the prompt, and Gym Leader Larry will say that Top Champion Geeta is his boss and he has to do what she says but will wonder why she is ordering a student around.
After an explanation from the player, Gym Leader Larry will understand that the player is helping Top Champion Geeta out to free up time to enter a tournament at the academy.
Next, Gym Leader Larry will say that wasting time is useless and that they knock this task off their list. Select “Yes” on the prompt, and then the player will be brought to the battle course inside Treasure Eatery!
Larry, The Exceptional Everyman: Rematch!
On the battle court, Gym Leader Larry will say that he doubts the battle will leave much of an impression on the player as they already faced each other on the Gym Test.
He will also explain that he will use Normal-type Pokemon, which he says suits him perfectly as he is as ordinary as anyone can get and that simplicity is the strongest. Then, a battle against Gym Leader Larry will commence!
As Larry will battle as a Gym Leader instead of as part of the Elite Four, Gym Leader Larry will use five Normal type Pokemon: a Level 65 Oinkologne (Female), a Level 65 Komala, a Level 65 Dudunsparce, a Level 65 Braviary, and a Level 66 Staraptor that has a Normal Tera type.
With that in mind, it is important to note that Oinkologne, regardless of male or female, is a Normal-type Pokemon. This means it has a weakness to Fighting-type moves (super effective) and immunity to Ghost-type moves (no effect).
Gym Leader Larry’s Oinkologne will use the following moves:
- Body Slam, a physical Normal-type move with 85 Power and 100 Accuracy that, aside from dealing damage, also has a 30% chance of paralyzing the opposing Pokemon.
- Bullet Seed, which is a physical Grass-type move with 25 Power and 100 Accuracy that will hit the opposing Pokemon two to five times consecutively (37.5% chance to hit two times, 37.5% chance to hit three times, 12.5% chance to hit four times, and 12.5% chance to hit five times).
- Zen Headbutt is a physical Psychic-type move with 80 Power and 90 Accuracy that, aside from dealing damage, also has a 20% chance of causing the opposing Pokemon to flinch.
- Iron Head is a physical Steel-type move with 80 Power and 100 Accuracy that, aside from dealing damage, also has a 30% chance of causing the opposing Pokemon to flinch.
Komala is also a Normal-type Pokemon, so it has a weakness to Fighting-type moves (super effective) and an immunity to Ghost-type moves (no effect).
Larry’s Komala will use the following moves:
- Yawn is a normal status move that will make the target Pokemon fall asleep at the end of the next turn.
- Sucker Punch is a physical Dark-type move with 70 Power and 100 Accuracy that will only damage the opposing Pokemon if it is about to use a damaging move. Otherwise, this move will fail.
- Wood Hammer is a physical Grass-type move with 120 Power and 100 Accuracy that, aside from dealing damage, will also deal recoil damage to the Pokemon who used the move, which is equal to a third of the damage dealt.
- Zen Headbutt, which is a physical Psychic type move with 80 Power and 90 Accuracy that, in addition to dealing damage, also has a 20% chance of causing the opposing Pokemon to flinch.
Aside from its moves, Larry’s Komala has the Ability called Comatose that allows the Pokemon with the ability to be treated as if it were asleep but can still attack normally.
Additionally, the attacks and abilities affected by Sleep still apply, like Sleep Talk, Snore, Hex, Wake-Up, Slap, Dream eaters, Nightmare, and Bad Dreams.
Dudunsparce is also a Normal-type Pokemon, so it has a weakness to Fighting-type moves (super effective) and an immunity to host-type moves (no effect).
Larry’s Dudunsparce will use the following moves:
- Dragon Rush is a physical Dragon-type move with 100 Power and 75 Accuracy that, aside from dealing damage, also has a 20% chance of causing the opposing Pokemon to flinch.
- Drill Run is a physical Ground-type move with 80 Power and 95 Accuracy with a 1-stage increased Critical Hit ratio.
- Hyper Drill is a physical Normal-type move with 100 Power and 100 Accuracy that, aside from dealing damage, will penetrate moves like Protect and Detect.
- Stone Edge is a physical Rock-type move with 100 Power and 80 Accuracy and also has a 1-stage increased Critical Hit ratio.
Braviary is a Normal and Flying-type Pokemon which means that it has a weakness to Electric-type, Ice-type, and Rock-type moves (super effective), a resistance to Bug-type and Grass-type moves (not very effective), and immunity to Ghost-type and Ground-type moves (no effect).
Gym Leader Larry’s Braviary will use the following moves:
- Crush Claw, a physical Normal-type move with 75 Power and 95 Accuracy that, aside from dealing damage, also has a 50% chance of lowering the Defense stat of the opposing Pokemon by one stage.
- Brave Bird is a physical Flying-type move with 120 Power and 100 Accuracy. In addition to dealing damage, it will also deal recoil damage to the Pokemon who used the move, which is equal to a third of the damage dealt to the opposing Pokemon.
- Close Combat is a physical Fighting-type move with 120 Power and 100 Accuracy that, aside from dealing damage, will also lower the Defense and Special Defense stat of the Pokemon who use the move by one stage.
- Rock Tomb is a physical Rock-type move with 60 Power and 95 Accuracy that, aside from dealing damage, will also lower the Speed stat of the opposing Pokemon by one stage.
Staraptor is also a Normal and Flying-type Pokemon, but, as Gym Leader Larry will Terastallize his Staraptor, it will become a Normal-type because of its Tera Type, which means that it also now has a weakness to Fighting-type moves (super effective) and an immunity to Ghost-type moves (no effect).
Larry’s Staraptor will use the following moves:
- Facade is a physical Normal-type move with 70 Power and 100 Accuracy that will double the damage if the Pokemon using the move is afflicted with Paralysis, Burn, Poison, or Toxic Poison.
- Brave Bird is a physical Flying-type move with 120 Power and 100 Accuracy that, aside from dealing damage, will also deal recoil damage to the Pokemon who used the move, which is equal to a third of the damage dealt to the opposing Pokemon.
- Close Combat is a physical Fighting-type move with 120 Power and 100 Accuracy that, aside from dealing damage, will also lower the Defense and Special Defense stat of the Pokemon who use the move by one stage.
- Thief is a physical Dark-type move with 60 Power and 100 Accuracy that, aside from dealing damage, will steal the held item of the opposing Pokemon if the Pokemon who used the move does not have a held item. The stolen held item will be returned at the end of the battle in trainer battles.
Aside from its moves, Gym Leader Larry’s Staraptor has the Ability called Intimidate that will lower the Attack stat of the opposing Pokemon by one stage whenever the Pokemon using the Ability enters the battlefield.
As Gym Leader Larry’s Pokemon are Level 65 and 66, it is recommended that the player use Pokemon that are Level 67 and above with Fighting-type and Electric-type, Ice-type, or Rock-type moves as Fighting-type moves will deal super effective damage to Gym Leader Larry’s Oinkologne, Komala, Dudunsparce, and Terastallized Staraptor. In contrast, Electric-type, Ice-type, and Rock-type moves will deal super effective damage to Gym Leader Larry’s Braviary.
Instead of using Fighting-type Pokemon against Gym Leader Larry’s Braviary and Staraptor, the player can use a Pokemon with a type that is neutral to or can resist Flying-type moves. This is because Flying-type moves will effectively damage Fighting-type Pokemon, making using them risky. So, the player can use a Pokemon that is not a Fighting-type but has Fighting-type moves.
After winning the battle, Gym Leader Larry will say that the player is too much for an average Joe like him to handle.
He will explain that he now understands why he was told to use Flying-type Pokemon as a member of the Elite Four because it will do him good to admire the talent that soars as high as the players occasionally.
The player can proceed to challenge other Gym Leaders in rematches and other post-game quests after defeating Gym Leader Larry in the rematch!
