Here are some ingredients for making a perfect anime series that are like Alderamin on the Sky: You put some military action in the shaker, add some drama to keep things interesting, put enough character development in there as well with maybe a love interest, and finally you can set it in the future or the past, with giant robots and dragons fighting one with another.
Okay, the last part is more optional but you get my point. Alderamin on the Sky is a superb anime that’s getting some buzz right now.
The anime is about Ikuta, who is a lazy womanizer. He hates the war that is going on between the Katjvarna empire and the Republic of Kioka. With no choice in the matter at hand, he becomes a High-Grade Military Officer in order to protect his homeland. Little does he know that he will become an unlikely hero to his country.
It has great animation, a well-written story, and fantastic characters; especially Ikuta who’s actually pretty charming for the most part. Now let’s say that you may or may not watch the series. What could be the next best thing to do?
Well, how about a list of 8 Anime like Alderamin that you can check out.
Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu (Legend of the Galactic Heroes)
An interstellar war between the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance has been raging for the last 150 years. In this story we set our focus on to two new commanders, Imperial Admiral Reinhard von Lohengramm and the FPA’s Yang Wen-Li. Will either one finally end this century and a half war?
Now, right off the bat, people will make the comparison to Mobile Suit Gundam or Macross which the animations are a bit similar to those animes. However, I’ll make the argument that this is more like Star Wars, in a sense of the politics and the space battles, but does it way better.
Watch this grand space opera of the ages.
Arslan Senki (The Heroic Legend of Arslan)
After the king of Pars has been betrayed, the young prince Arslan is on the run. Alongside with the prince is the loyal Daryun, a respected general, and they are on a journey to gain allies and take back their kingdom.
If you’re interested in a war story that has interesting storytelling, strong characters that you care for, and the journey of a prince, then you’re in for a treat. A must watch for all.
Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu (The Legend of the Legendary Heroes)
Ryner Lute, a talented mage, has been ordered to search for a relic that could aid their nation. With Ryner is Ferris Eris, a highly skilled swordswoman. They will save their nation by finding items from heroes past.
Now, the premise may be a bit cliché but it’s the way that the story is told that makes it a reason that you have to watch. A great series that has magic and it’s medieval setting.
Senjou no Valkyria (Valkyria Chronicles)
Here’s an anime that is based on a video game and a pretty darn good one as well.
Join Welkin, his adoptive sister Isara, and Alicia as they fight The Imperial Empire with a ragtag militia group known as Squad 7. They will take back their homeland or die trying.
This anime seems to get a bad rap for some reason but it’s one of the most under-appreciated anime series I have ever watched. Watch and spread the word of how good this anime is.
Gate: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri (GATE)
What happens when you combine today’s warfare with fantasy? You get this glorious series.
A mysterious portal opens up and supernatural creatures and warriors from a distant past come out and start attacking Japan. Three months later, Youji is leading a special forces team to go inside the portal to get a better understanding of what they are dealing with. If they fail, both worlds will be in total devastation.
This show is very creative and it is awesome to watch the action. If you haven’t seen it then you should.
Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen (Utawarerumono: The False Faces)
This is a tad bit different compared to your usual anime but in a good way.
A young man has awakened in a vast snowy plain and can’t remember who he is. As he stands there completely dumbfounded, a gigantic insect appears and attacks him. He tries to outrun it but then he is cornered.
All of a sudden, a beautiful girl appears to save him and this where the real adventure begins.
Short and to the point, give this gem of a anime a shot. It’s surprisingly good and if you happen to enjoy Utawarerumono then this is a fantastic follow-up.
Kingdom
Something that you rarely see in anime is when they do a historical series.
Xin Li, a war-orphaned slave, trains himself to maybe one day become a great general. It will be a long and tiring journey but he will do all it takes to get there.
The Chinese warfare, strategic battles, and just other things make this anime series that good.
No Game, No Life
Sora and Shiro have been transported into a virtual world, by the God of Games known as Tet. They battle the god through a series of games and if they win, they become the new gods of that world.
This is one heck of a surreal anime and overall it’s just absolutely fantastic to watch.
