The Destiny 2 Expunge mission is insanely cool

If there’s one thing Bungie nails time and time again, it’s cool puzzle-type platforming missions in Destiny 2. The kind where you’re asked to duck through small openings and make death-defying jumps while narrowly avoiding being crushed by moving walls. The kind where, the first time through, you’re not actually sure if you’re doing it correctly. The Destiny 2 Expunge mission is exactly that, and it’s awesome.

The Destiny 2 Expunge mission is insanely cool

You’ll gain access to this new mission after you speak to the Splicer Servitor in the Helm and pick up this week’s quest. The first item on your checklist is to complete an Override mission and open one of the special chests at the end. This week, Override takes place on the Tangled Shore and features Scorn enemies. Everyone hates the Scorn. This is known.

After that, however, Mithrax will send you a chip that lets you take on a whole new mission, which you’ll also access from the Tangled Shore map. This mission, called “Expunge: Labyrinth,” is the real fun you’ll have this week, no question about it.

Expunge will probably kill you quite a bit your first run

If you were around for The Whisper or Zero Hour, you’ll have a good idea of what to expect here. Just imagine those, but with a bit more Vex flavor.

There are doors that open and close on a timer, forcing you to really pay attention to find an opening to move forward. There are trick paths that will dump you right where you started if you take them. There are moving walls waiting to impale you. There are Vex defense lasers making a pass every so often to keep you on your toes. There are occasions where you’ll look around, say, “I have no idea where I’m supposed to go,” and then leap to the next platform within jumping distance to see if that is correct.

I’m trying to be as vague as possible here, because I don’t want to ruin everything that you’re going to face. What I will say, though, is that there is a final encounter, and it is quite beatable with just one person. This differs a lot from those aforementioned missions, which really insisted that you bring some pals along for DPS.

Then again, this mission doesn’t award an Exotic weapon, either. I don’t think that’s a spoiler, in that it’s something you’ll probably want to know so you don’t get your hopes up. It looks to be more of a repeatable activity, and seeing as “Expunge” has a colon and a “Labyrinth” after it, there may be more than one we get over the next few weeks.

Do this as soon as you can

I have a feeling a lot of people are going to be talking about the Destiny 2 Expunge mission as soon as they’re able to get in and do it, and they may not be as kind in the spoiler department. That’s why I’m recommending you make this activity a priority. When you log on tonight, do your Override mission, and then do this. That way no one’s trying to give you tips or pointers. You don’t want that help. You want to experience this on your own.

I’m eager to see what else will come of this “Expunge” thing as the season rolls on. Perhaps it will tie into some kind of Exotic weapon in the future. We’ll just have to wait and see.
