A lot of titles helped define the launch of the Nintendo Switch, but this year will finally see the sequel to the highly acclaimed Splatoon 2. Splatoon 3 is set to launch next month, and we have a new beginner’s guide to anyone who hasn’t played the previous games before, but wants to jump in on the inkling action in September.

New to Splatoon or just want a… re-fresh-er on the basics? Start with this video to learn about Splatoon, Inklings, and… fur? Even if you’re a Splatoon veteran, there’s a lot to discover in this Squid Research Orientation!
While Splatoon does look like your typical shooter, it does have a lot of fun with the concept of the Inklings. While your human mode can go around painting the landscape with ink, you’ll have to refill your guns by going squid mode and swimming in your paint. With squid mode though, you can travel faster, and use it to climb up painted walls and jump farther than a human would.
The idea that you just have to paint the entire map is simple as well, and though you can eliminate other players, it’s pretty much encouraged that you spend your time just painting what isn’t your team’s color.
It’s a pretty simple but fun concept very reminiscent of Nintendo classics, and I’m sure a lot of fans can’t wait to jump into Splatsville when the game launches in a few weeks.
Splatoon 3 will be available for the Nintendo Switch on Sept. 09.
