There is a lot of hype surrounding the return of a classic franchise with Return to Monkey Island. The game is set to come to Nintendo Switch and PC this year, but even though we don’t have a specific release date, Devolver Digital has given us a look at the upcoming revival.
Watch this:
Here’s the official story description:
It’s been many years since Guybrush Threepwood was last locked in a battle of wits with his nemesis, the zombie pirate LeChuck. His true love, Elaine Marley, has turned her focus away from governing and Guybrush himself is adrift and unfulfilled, having never found the Secret of Monkey Island. Hip, young pirate leaders led by Captain Madison have shuffled the old guard from power, Melee Island has taken a turn for the worse, and famed businessman Stan has been imprisoned for ‘marketing-related crimes’.
Banter with old friends and new faces on familiar islands now under dangerous new leadership. Then, take to the high seas and explore the new and unknown as you work your way out of tough predicaments. Clever puzzles, bizarre situations, and devastating ripostes are all that stand between Guybrush and glory.
If you’ve played the original Monkey Island games, you’ll notice the change in art style, which is leaning more on a cartoonish look than the original’s more realistic aesthetic. While some fans may not like the change, I think it will be all for the best. After all, they did bring back original series creator Ron Gilbert.
With Monkey Island having its cult status, you can bet there is going to be a lot of criticism hurled at Return to Monkey Island, but hopefully Gilbert comes up with a game that not only will be loved by original fans, but by newcomers as well.
Return to Monkey Island is set to release for PC and the Nintendo Switch sometime this year.
