When To Multiclass in Baldur's Gate 3 - Answered

Multiclass is a unique Dungeons and Dragons gameplay mechanic that allows you to mix and match multiple classes in a single character, allowing for versatile character builds with Actions, Cantrips, Spells, and Class Features from various classes.

Since Baldur’s Gate 3 uses D&D’s RPG mechanics, you can expect to see the same multiclass option in-game as well, and you’re probably wondering when the best time to multiclass your character for the best results is. We will answer that question in this quick guide.

You can multiclass when your character reaches Level 2 in Baldur’s Gate 3. There are no stat requirements nor class restrictions for multiclassing in the game, but you must play on at least Balanced difficulty to use the feature.

Whenever your characters level up, you can pick a secondary class and add that class’s features to your character. Before you add a class to a character, however, here are a few things you must remember:

  • Your main character won’t reach the max level (Level 12) since the secondary class will take a few levels off the total Level count. (ex. Level 9 Sorc + Level 3 Warlock)
  • Your main character’s starting HP will be based on your primary class’ base HP.
  • You only receive the proficiencies of your primary class.
  • Classes level up separately.

If you decide to multiclass a character in Baldur’s Gate 3, you might want to do it as soon as you hit Level 2. This way, you can add the secondary class bonuses to your base class early in the game, which can help tremendously as you progress through BG3.

Should You Multiclass in BG3?

However, multiclass also has its drawbacks. One of the most important ones is the inability to reach max level with your character, which means you’ll miss out on max-level-exclusive abilities for that class.
