The World War Z 2 movie may be as dead as a… zombie, but at least Saber Interactive’s game set in the WWZ universe is getting a follow-up of sorts.

World War Z: Aftermath Expands and Improves With First Person Mode, New Locations, and More

Saber Interactive has announced today that World War Z: Aftermath will be releasing on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. The PS4, Xbox One, and PC versions are due to launch later this year, while the next-gen enhanced PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions will release in 2022.

World War Z: Aftermath is described as “the next evolution” of the original World War Z game. So it’s not a full-on sequel, but more of a World War Z 1.5, which is .5 more than the movie got, so we should be grateful. Besides, a World War Z sequel is likely, as hinted by the developer.

The semi-sequel will bring enough new features to make it worth the price, though. Aftermath ships with new locations, new story modes, and even a new perspective – first person. Yeah, Aftermath is going after Back 4 Blood’s lunch when it launches later this year by going one step further to being Left 4 Dead, not that any of us are complaining, right?

World War Z: Aftermath is also being powered by the next generation of Saber Interactive’s Swarm Engine, but to really see the best of it, you’ll have to wait until the next-gen release in 2022. The version that launches later this year for PS4 and Xbox One will be playable with enhancements on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S – you’ll be able to play at 4K/60FPS, but even more improvements specific to the next-gen versions, as well as the planned free Horde Mode XL, will come in 2022.
If you already own World War Z, you’ll be able to get the Aftermath expansion at a reduced rate of $19.99, or $29.99 if you want the deluxe version with the bonus weapon pack, weapon skins, and four days of early access. If you do not own the original but you are now interested in World War Z because of Aftermath, you can get the entire bundle – World War Z: Game of the Year Edition and the Aftermath expansion – for $39.99, or $49.99 for the deluxe version.

And of course, if you don’t yet have a next-gen console, your PS4/Xbox One version of the game will get upgraded to the next-gen edition at no extra cost. Lovely stuff.
