After what feels like years of waiting, Square Enix has finally given Final Fantasy fans a first look at the follow-up to Final Fantasy VII Remake—Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. It features the return of Cloud as well as the appearance of the game’s big villain, Sephiroth.

Rebirth is just at the top of the reveals though, as creative director Tetsuya Nomura has confirmed that there are currently four Final Fantasy VII projects in the works. After Remake and Rebirth, we are expected to get a third game in a now-announced trilogy. We’re also getting the spinoff prequel Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion which will be focusing on Zack Fair rather than Cloud.
While it must be a bummer that we have to wait until winter next year to jump into Rebirth, fans will be able to get their hands on the Zack-fuelled game Crisis Core this winter. That should add some more backstory to Aerith’s character as well as her ‘ex-boyfriend-that-Cloud-reminds-her-of’.
Not every Final Fantasy game makes the cultural landmark that FFVII did, and it makes a lot of sense for Square to really squeeze out this story. Even though a lot of fans know where it’s leading, it has been hinted that we could see a change in the story when it comes to this new trilogy of games.
No specific release date has been announced for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, but the game is expected to launch sometime in the winter of 2023.
