How to Find the Grubs in Greenpath in Hollow Knight

Team Cherry’s Metroidvania action-adventure game, Hollow Knight, follows the journey of a nameless warrior called the Knight as he travels through Hallownest, which is now a kingdom in ruins because of a supernatural disease. As the Knight journeys through Hallownest, he will encounter various characters that will help fully unravel the story in the game. Some of these characters are cute little creatures called Grubs.

Grubs are small green creatures trapped inside glass jars that the Knight will find throughout Hallownest. These Grubs were trapped by a Void creature named The Collector, who loves to collect dead and alive bugs all around Hallownest and preserve them in glass jars.

The Knight will know if a Grub is nearby as its high-pitched crying can be heard in its general direction. Then, once the Knight finds one, the Knight can free them by striking the glass jar with the Nail to break it. After the Knight frees a Grub, it will do a little high-pitched shout of joy and burrow into the ground to return to its colony with the Grubfather.

There are a total of 46 Grubs all over Hallownest, and there are a few rewards for freeing a specific number of Grubs:

  • For the first four Grubs found, the Grubfather, found in the northwesternmost part of the Forgotten Crossroads, will reward the Knight with Geo (10 Geo for the first Grub, 20 Geo for the second, 30 Geo for the third, and 40 Geo for the fourth Grub found).
  • After freeing the fifth Grub, the Grubfather will reward the Knight with a Mask Shard.
  • After freeing the sixth to ninth Grubs, the Grubfather will reward the Knight with Geo (50 Geo for the sixth, 60 Geo for the seventh, 70 Geo for the eighth, and 80 Geo for the ninth Grub found).
  • After freeing the tenth Grub, the Grubfather will reward the Knight the Grubsong Charm, which allows the Knight to gain Soul when taking damage.
  • After freeing the 11th to 15th Grub, the Grubfather will reward the Knight with Geo (90 Geo for the 11th, 100 Geo for the 12th, 110 Geo for the 13th, 120 Geo for the 14th, and 130 Geo for the 15th Grub found).
  • After freeing the 16th Grub, the Grubfather will reward the Knight with a Rancid Egg.
  • After freeing the 17th to 22nd Grub, the Grubfather will reward the Knight with Geo (140 Geo for the 17th, 150 Geo for the 18th, 160 Geo for the 19th, 165 Geo for the 20th, 170 Geo for the 21st, and 180 Geo for the 22nd Grub found).
  • After freeing half (23) of the total Grubs, the Grubfather will reward the Knight with a Hallownest Seal, and the Grubfriend Achievement will be unlocked.
  • After freeing the 24th to 30th Grub, the Grubfather will reward the Knight with Geo (200 Geo for the 24th, 200 Geo for the 25th, 205 Geo for the 26th, 210 Geo for the 27th, 215 Geo for the 28th, 220 Geo for the 29th, and 220 Geo for the 30th Grub found).
  • After freeing the 31st Grub, the Grubfather will reward the Knight with a Pale Ore.
  • After freeing the 32nd to 37th Grub, the Grubfather will reward the Knight with Geo (230 Geo for the 32nd, 235 Geo for the 33rd, 240 Geo for the 34th, 245 Geo for the 35th, 250 Geo for the 36th, and 255 Geo for the 37th Grub found).
  • After freeing the 38th Grub, the Grubfather will reward the Knight with a King’s Idol.
  • After freeing the 39th to 45th Grub, the Grubfather will reward the Knight with Geo (260 Geo for the 39th, 265 Geo for the 40th, 270 Geo for the 41st, 280 Geo for the 42nd, 290 Geo for the 43rd, 295 Geo for the 44th, and 300 Geo for the 45th Grub found).
  • After freeing all of the Grubs around Hallownest, the Grubfather will reward the Knight the Grubberfly’s Elegy Charm, which allows the Knight to fire projectiles when attacking using the Nail and when at full health, and the Metamorphosis Achievement is unlocked.

This guide will teach you how to find all the Grubs in Greenpath!

Greenpath Grub 1

A screenshot showing the location of one of the grubs in Greenpath in Hollow Knight

There are four Grubs in the Greenpath area. One can be found on a platform just above where Cornifer can be found in the area on the eastern side of Greenpath.

The Knight will encounter various enemies in Kingdom’s Edge and Greenpath. Still, the Knight will specifically encounter the following enemies on the way to the first Grub: a Tiktik, Crawlids, Gruzzers, an Elder Baldur, Volatile Mosskins, a Mosskin, Maskflies, a Mosscreep, and Squits

Fortunately, the Knight must have no required abilities or spells to find this Grub.

To find the first Grub in Greenpath, this is what the Knight must do (assuming that this is the Knight’s first time in the area):

  1. Starting from the Bench up in Dirtmouth, head to the right past the Stagway Station entrance and Iselda’s Shop, then drop down the entrance of the Forgotten Crossroads.
  2. Next, upon landing, head to the left, jump across the gap, continue heading to the left, drop down the platforms where the Knight will encounter a Tiktik and a Crawlid, then take the exit on the left.
  3. Then, head to the left, jump across the gap towards the platform below on the left where the Knight will encounter a few Gruzzers and a Crawlid, drop down the gap on the left towards a small platform, drop down the gap on the left and head towards the wall on the left where the Knight will land on a ledge, drop down the gap on the right where the Knight will land on another ledge, then take the exit on the left with a lot of greenery.
  4. Afterward, head to the left, where Elder Baldur will block the path. The Knight must first defeat Elder Baldur to continue. It is important to mention that the Knight will not be able to attack the Elder Baldurs using the Nail as they will curl up and protect themselves when they try to get close to them. The Knight must use the Vengeful Spirit spell to defeat the Elder Baldurs. Once the Knight runs out of Soul, just wait for the Elder Baldurs to throw out regular Baldurs for the Knight to attack and gain Soul from. After that, cast the Vengeful Spirit spell again.
  5. After defeating the Elder Baldur, head to the left, drop down the small platform below on the right (be careful not to fall to the pool of acid below), jump towards the slightly longer platform above on the left, jump up towards the smaller platform above on the left, drop down the platform on the ground, jump towards the small platform on the left, jump towards the smaller platform above on the left, jump towards the slightly longer platform below on the left, jump across the gap to the pool of acid towards the platform on the left, jump across another gap with the pool of acid, continue to the left, at the end of the path jump up the path above on the right, head up the platforms on the right, at the top head to the left, then take the exit.
  6. Next, the Knight has now arrived in Greenpath. Head to the left, jump across the gap with the pool of acid below towards the elevated platform above on the left, jump towards the small platform above on the left, jump towards the large platform on the left where the Knight will encounter a Mosskin, head to the left, jump across the gap, continue to the left where the Knight will encounter a few Maskflies who will run away once the Knight is near, jump towards the small platform below on the left, jump up the platform above on the left, continue heading to the left, jump towards the long platform on the left where the Knight will encounter another Volatile Mosskin, and jump towards the elevated platform on the left.
  7. Then, drop down the platforms on the left, jump towards the small platform on the left, jump towards another small platform on the left, jump up the small platform above on the left, jump towards the large platform on the left where the Knight will encounter a Mosscreep, head to the left, at the end of the path drop down the gap on the left, then take the exit on the left.
  8. After that, head to the left, where there will again be a few Maskflies, then take the exit on the left. It is worth mentioning that there is a Bench on the top of this room where the Knight can heal up and save your progress.
  9. Next, head to the left, drop down the platform, head to the left, drop down the small platform below on the left, drop down the small platform below on the left, drop down the small platform below on the right (it is worth noting that there is a Geo Deposit on the path on the left with the pool of acid and a Squit), drop down the small platform below on the left, drop down on another small platform below on the right, drop down the long ledge below on the left, jump towards the small platform on the right, jump towards the large platform on the right, head to the right, drop down the gap on the right, land on a small platform (it is worth noting that there is another Geo Deposit on the path on the left), drop down the small platform below on the right, drop down the platform below, then take the exit on the right.
  10. Then, head to the right, drop down the platform, head to the right where the Knight will encounter a Squit, jump towards the platform on the right held up by vines, jump towards the small platform on the left, jump towards the platform above on the left that is also being held up by vines, strike the vines to break it and let the platform that the Knight is standing on fall, jump towards the elevated platform above on the right, head to the right, and jump up the platform on the right.
  11. After that, drop down the small platform below on the right, jump towards the platform on the right that is being held up by vines, jump towards the platform on the right where there will be two Volatile Mosskins underneath, jump up the platform above on the right, jump up the platform on the right, head to the right where the Knight will encounter another Squit, drop down the platform on the right where the Knight will encounter another Volatile Mosskin, drop down the platform on the right, continue heading to the right where the Knight will encounter another Squit, jump towards the small platform on the right (be careful not to fall on the spikes down below), jump up the small platform above on the right, jump up the ledge above on the right, and jump up the top of the wall on the right to reveal a hidden path.
  12. Next, head to the right, where the Knight will encounter a Squit, and at the end of the path, there is another platform held up by vines. Strike the vines to break it and let the platform fall.
  13. Then, head back to the left, drop down the ledge on the left, drop down the platform below on the left, drop down the platform below on the right, drop down the gap on the right, and jump towards the recently fallen platform below on the right.
  14. Finally, jump towards the platform above on the right, which the Knight can now reach thanks to the platform that just fell. Jump up the small platform above, then jump towards the platform on the right, and there, the Knight will find a Grub trapped inside a glass jar! The Knight can now strike the jar to free the Grub!

Greenpath Grub 2

A screenshot showing the location of one of the grubs in Greenpath in Hollow Knight

The second Grub in Greenpath can be found in the top right corner of a room in the northern part of Greenpath.

The Knight will encounter many enemies in Greenpath, but the Knight will only encounter a Moss Charger on the way to the second Grub.

Fortunately, there are also no required abilities or spells that the Knight must have to find this Grub.

To find the second Grub in Greenpath, this is what the Knight must do:

  1. Starting from the Bench in the Greenpath Stagway Station, head to the right to exit the room, head up by jumping up the small platforms, and take the exit at the top.
  2. Next, head to the left, jump up the small platform, jump towards the next platform on the right, and continue to the right, where the Knight will encounter a Moss Charger.
  3. Finally, jump up the small platform, onto the platform above on the right, and head to the right, where the Knight will encounter a Moss Knight. At the end of the path, the Knight will find a Grub trapped in a glass jar! The Knight can now strike the glass jar to break it and free the Grub!

Greenpath Grub 3

A screenshot showing the location of one of the grubs in Greenpath in Hollow Knight

The third Grub in Greenpath can be found in the bottom left corner of the room in the southeastern part of Greenpath.

The Knight will encounter many enemies in Greenpath, but the Knight will only encounter a Squit on the way to the third Grub.

Fortunately, there are also no required abilities or spells that the Knight must have to find this Grub.

To find the third Grub in Greenpath, this is what the Knight must do (this is assuming that this is the Knight’s first time in the area):

  1. Starting from the Hunter’s location in the easternmost part of Greenpath, head to the left, then take the exit.
  2. Next, head to the left, drop down the next gap where the Knight will land on a platform resting above some spikes, jump towards the platform on the left that is being held up by vines, and strike the vines to let the platform that the Knight is standing on fall and rest on top of more spikes below.
  3. Then, jump across the spikes towards the platform on the right that is also being held up by vines, then strike the vines to let the platform that the Knight is standing on fall and float on top of a pool of acid below and where the Knight will encounter a Squit.
  4. Finally, jump towards the platform above on the right, where the Knight will find a Grub trapped inside a glass jar! The Knight can now strike the glass jar to break it and free the Grub!

Greenpath Grub 4

A screenshot showing the location of one of the grubs in Greenpath in Hollow Knight

The fourth Grub in Greenpath can be found in the room at the southernmost part of Greenpath.

The Knight will encounter lots of various enemies in Greenpath. Still, the Knight will specifically encounter the following enemies on the way to the third Grub: Gulkas, Maskflies, Durandoos, and the Massive Moss Charger, which is an optional mini-boss. Fortunately, fighting and defeating the Massive Moss Charger is not required, and the Knight can just run past it.

Before the Knight can find the Grub that was mentioned, it is required that the Knight has the Mothwing Cloak ability, which allows the Knight to perform a horizontal dash forward, or the Monarch Wings ability, which allows the Knight to perform a secondary jump in mid-air.

Also, the player must be proficient at Nail-bouncing. Although not required, it would also help that the Knight has the Crystal Heart ability, which allows the Knight to fly and dash continuously and horizontally until the Knight hits a wall, hits an enemy that was not killed by the hit, or if the player intentionally stops the dash, or the Isma’s Tear ability, which allows the Knight to swim in pools of acid without taking damage. Finding the fourth Grub in Greenpath will be no challenge with these abilities.

To find the third Grub in Greenpath, this is what the Knight must do:

  1. Starting from the Bench near the Stone Sanctuary, head to the left to exit the room, continue heading to the left, and pass through a narrow path where the Knight will encounter a Gulka. After the narrow path, drop down the next gap on the left and land on a small platform, drop down the left to land on another small platform, and drop down the platform below.
  2. Next, head to the right, drop down the gap where the Knight will encounter another Gulkajump up the platforms on the right where the Knight will encounter another Gulka on the wall on the right, drop down the gap on the right, and drop down another gap on the right.
  3. Then, drop down the gap on the left, jump across the pool of acid, drop down the platform on the left, jump, and dash, or perform a secondary jump across the gap with the help of the Mothwing Cloak ability or the Monarch Wings ability towards the ledge on the left, then take the exit.
  4. After that, head to the left, drop down the platforms on the left where the Knight will encounter the Massive Moss Charger, which is an optional mini-boss, continue heading to the left, jump up the slightly elevated platform, jump across the gap towards the platform above on the left, then take the exit at the end of the path.
  5. Next, head to the left, jump up the platform above on the left, jump up the ledge above on the right, jump up towards the platform above on the left, jump up the ledge above on the right, and jump up the platform above on the left where the Knight will encounter a Gulka and several Maskflies.
  6. Then, drop down the gap on the left, drop down the ledge below on the left, drop down the ledge below where the Knight will encounter another Gulka, drop down the ledge below on the right where the Knight will encounter another Gulka, drop down the small platform below, drop down the gap on the right to land on a small platform, drop down the small platform below on the left where there will be a Durandoo below, drop down the opening on the wall below on the left, then take the exit.
  7. After that, drop down the platforms on the left, head to the left where there will be pool of acid and a Durandoo that swims side to side, wait for the Durandoo to be near the Knight, jump and nail-bounce several times on the top of the Durandoo to head to the left, and land on the platform on the left (it is worth noting that the Knight can also super dash with help of the Crystal Heart ability or swim in the pool of acid with the help of the Isma’s Tear ability to cross the gaps easily).
  8. Next, jump across the pool of acid towards the slightly elevated platform on the left, drop down the platform on the left where there is another pool of acid and another Durandoo that swims side to side, wait for the Durandoo to be near the Knight, jump and nail-bounce several times on the top of the Durandoo to head to the left, and land on the platform on the left.
  9. Then, jump up the elevated platform above on the left, drop down the platform below on the left where there is another pool of acid and another Durandoo that swims side to side, wait for the Durandoo to be near the Knight, jump and nail-bounce several times on the top of the Durandoo to head to the left, jump and nail-bounce several times on top of the next Durandoo on the left to keep heading to the left, then land on the platform on the left.
  10. After that, jump up the elevated platform on the left, jump towards the small platform above on the right, jump towards another small platform above on the right, jump towards the small platform above on the right, jump towards another small platform above on the right, and jump towards the platform above on the right.
  11. Finally, head to the right and the Knight will find a Grub trapped inside a glass jar! The Knight can now strike the glass jar to break it and free the Grub!

After finding all of the Grubs in Greenpath, the Knight is one step closer to finding them all, receiving the Grubberfly’s Elegy Charm and unlocking the Metamorphosis Achievement!
