Learn how to build in Tears of the Kingdom!
A captivating journey awaits the player in the beautiful world of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. One of the newest mechanics introduced in this game is the power to move, manipulate, and attach objects.
With this, the player can build whatever their heart desires! Building is an important feature of this world because it allows players to change the landscape and create their own paths to uncover mysteries. As the hero of Hyrule, Link’s responsibility goes beyond simple exploration. The player will use the power to build to reach various areas and conquer challenges.
This guide will discuss how to build in Tears of the Kingdom! Understanding the art of building in the game unlocks the door to a world of limitless possibilities and discovery through a seamless blend of creativity, strategy, and exploration.
How to Build Guide – Tears of the Kingdom
In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Link gets and can use several new powers. However, to build in the game, these are what Link needs:
1. The Ultrahand Ability
Link needs to acquire the Ultrahand ability to get the ability to build in Tears of the Kingdom. This ability allows Link to grab and transport objects at will and rotate and attach them to various other objects. This is similar to the Magnesis Rune ability in Breath of the Wild. The Ultrahand ability, on the other hand, is not confined to metallic objects and has extra potential.
Link must go to the Ukouh Shrine, or “The Ability to Create,” to acquire the Ultrahand ability. This Shrine is located on top of a rock on the northern side of Great Sky Island, southwest of the Temple of Time. Link can discover this Shrine through the following coordinates: 0274, -0913, 1460. The Ukouh Shrine is Link’s first interaction with a Shrine in Tears of the Kingdom.
How to Use the Ultrahand Ability
These are what Link must do to use the Ultrahand ability:
- First, hold the L button and use the right stick to select the Ultrahand ability. This ability is on the left part of the ability wheel.
- Next, aim for the desired object you want to manipulate. The possible objects that Link can manipulate are highlighted in orange. Press the A button to grab it.
- Then, the player can move Link to move the object. Alternatively, the player can move the right stick left or right to move the object around Link. The player can also move the right stick up and down to move the object up a height or down on the ground. Instead of the right stick, the player can also use the gyroscope of the Nintendo Switch to do the same.
- Also, the player can press the up or down directional buttons to move the object further away or closer to Link.
- In addition, the player can also rotate the object. Hold the R button and press the left or right directional button to rotate the object horizontally, or press the up or down directional button to rotate the object vertically. Every press of the directional button rotates the object in the desired direction for about 45 degrees.
- If the object is already attached to a different object, the player can wiggle the right stick to detach the selected object.
- To attach the selected object to a different object, move the object near the other object. There will be a green glow where the object will be attached if confirmed. Once ready, press the A button to attach the object.
- If the player just wants to move an object without attaching it to another object, the player can simply press the B button to cancel the ability and let go of the object.
2. Planning the Build in Tears of the Kingdom
The first thing to do to start building is to determine what the player wants to build. Doing so will help the player identify the materials needed for the contraption. Creating a simple wagon, for example, would require simple materials like planks of wood and a few wheels.
On the other hand, building a vehicle would require more specific materials that are usually quite challenging. Once the player has determined the contraption they want to build, they can identify the parts or materials they want to use.
It is important to note that Link can use many different objects to build. This means that some materials can have alternatives with their advantages. An example is the wheel, which can be a wooden wheel, a Small Zonai Wheel, or a Large Zonai Wheel.
3. Materials
Now that Link has the power to manipulate objects, the only thing missing to start building are the actual materials!
Hyrule Restoration Materials
In Tears of the Kingdom, Link can use different materials to build different things. However, instead of blindly looking for items to use, Link can go to the stashes of Hyrule Restoration Materials. These are caches of building materials, mostly wooden, found scattered around Hyrule. Link usually finds wooden platforms of different sizes, wheels, and columns.
Zonai Devices
The most important building materials in Tears of the Kingdom are Zonai Devices. They are ready-made devices with various effects and applications. Examples of Zonai Devices are simple fans and carts and even powerful rockets and cannons. These Zonai Devices, like any other device, require power to function. This power comes from Link’s Batteries, which are also referred to as the Energy Cells. The more Zonai Devices currently in use, the more power Link’s Energy Cell consumes.
Link will be able to discover Zonai Devices all over Hyrule. But, Link is unable to place these in his inventory. Link must first obtain Zonai Devices as capsules to do this. But keep in mind that after Link drops the Zonai Device capsule on the ground, he cannot place them back in his inventory. To obtain capsules of Zonai Devices, Link must first trade a few Zonai Charges for them at Zonai Device Dispensers. These dispensers are scattered across Hyrule.
It is important to note that a specific Zonai Device Dispenser will only release four specific Zonai Devices. Then, from the four Zonai Devices, the Zonai Devices that will drop are randomized. This means that while a dispenser may drop a specific Zonai Device, it is not guaranteed to drop the desired device. As a result, it is advised to trade five Zonai Charges rather than just one.
Link will only receive one Zonai Device for dropping one Zonai Charge. However, trading five Zonai Charges, or even Large Zonai Charges, increases the number of capsules dropped significantly. This implies you have a better probability of receiving a specific Zonai Device if more Zonai Charges are dropped.
Steward Constructs are another option for getting Zonai Device capsules. Link can buy Zonai Devices from them, but instead of Rupees, the Steward Constructs will require Crystallized Charges. This is not a recommended strategy, as Crystallized Charges are also needed to boost the capacity of Link’s Energy Cell. If Link’s Energy Cell is already maxed out or the player simply wants to, this option is always available.
List of Zonai Devices
The Zonai Devices that Link finds in the game are as follows:
Zonai Balloon
When full of hot air, this Zonai Device will rise. The hot air can be from various fire sources. The Zonai Balloon will also rise quicker the more fire is under it.

4. Batteries
Another important thing to note is Link’s batteries. As mentioned, the player’s build in Tears of the Kingdom uses more battery as additional Zonai Devices are added. Also, if the player wishes to use it longer, Link needs more energy in his Energy Cell.
Creating something that works with Link’s default quantity of one battery icon is technically possible. However, Link can only use it for a very limited period. Link must upgrade his Energy Cell to use the build longer.
Energy Well
Link must gather Energy Wells to improve his Energy Cell and gain additional batteries. One-third of the battery icon is equal to a single Energy Well. To put it another way, three Energy Wells equal one battery icon. Link can earn an extra 45 Energy Wells in the game for an overall of 48, equivalent to 16 battery icons.
Link must collect 100 Crystallized Charges to obtain a single Energy Well. Then, proceed to a Crystal Refinery and exchange them for an Energy Well.
Crystallized Charges
Normal Crystallized Charges, Large Crystallized Charges, and Huge Crystallized Charges are the three varieties of Crystallized Charges in the game.
Crystallized Charges are easily obtained from chests and bosses, including Flux Constructs and Froxes. The most common method to obtain Crystallized Charges is to purchase them from Forge Constructs. Link, however, must exchange Zonaite for Crystallized Charges instead of Rupees.
Link can purchase one normal Crystallized Charge from Forge Constructs for three Zonaites. Because of that, Link must acquire 300 Zonaites to gather 100 Crystallized Charges to exchange for one Energy Well.
One Large Crystallized Charge is equal to twenty Crystallized Charges. So, instead of 100 Crystallized Charges, Link may collect 5 Large Crystallized Charges to create one Energy Well. Link must exchange three Large Zonaites to Forge Constructs for a single Large Crystallized Charge.
To obtain one Energy Well, Link must collect 15 Large Zonaites to get 5 Large Crystallized Charges. Link may also acquire Large Crystallized Charges by eliminating a Stalnox, Black Hinox, and Frox.
Lastly, a Huge Crystallized Charge is equal to 100 Crystallized Charges. This implies that only one Huge Crystallized Charge piece is needed to produce one Energy Well. Regrettably, Link cannot buy Huge Crystallized Charges from any merchant or Forge Construct.
However, Link can obtain Huge Crystallized Charges after defeating Master Kohga in the Great Abandoned Central Mine, the Abandoned Gerudo Mine, the Abandoned Lanayru Mine, and the Abandoned Hebra Mine.
Also, Link may get a Huge Crystallized Charge for defeating one of the four regional monsters in another battle in the Depths for the first time. These bosses are Colgera, Marbled Gohma, Queen Gibdo, and Mucktorok.
Crystal Refinery
After gathering the required Crystallized Charges, Link can now convert them into Energy Wells. Link can do so by visiting the Crystal Refinery. In front of the Nachoya Shrine, there is a Crystal Refinery. This Shrine is near the Room of Awakening in the southernmost part of Great Sky Island. Link may find the Crystal Refinery in these coordinates: 0363, -1652, 2298.
Temporary Battery
Link, similar to his hearts and stamina, can get temporary batteries. For that, Link must consume Zonai Charges. Doing so will give Link a temporary Energy Well. This will not recharge after Link has depleted it.
It is important to mention that Zonai Charges only temporarily charge if utilized while the battery is fully charged. Otherwise, the Zonai Charge will replenish one Energy Well’s worth of charge.
Another sort of Zonai Charge is the Large Zonai Charge. This item replenishes or grants three temporary Energy Wells. Again, three Energy Wells correspond to one battery icon.
Link may get Zonai Charges and Large Zonai Charges by purchasing them from Forge Constructs. Link will gain one Zonai Charge for every two Zonaites and one Large Zonai Charge for every one Large Zonaite.
Besides buying them, Link can obtain Zonai Charges as a drop from Soldier Constructs. Soldier Construct I, Soldier Construct II, Soldier Construct III, Soldier Construct IV, Captain Construct I, Captain Construct II, Captain Construct III, Captain Construct IV, Training Construct, Flux Construct I, Flux Construct II, and Flux Construct III, in particular, drop Zonai Charges.
Link can get Large Zonai Charges as drops from Soldier Construct IV, Captain Construct III, Captain Construct IV, Flux Construct II, and Flux Construct III.
5. Actual Tears of the Kingdom Building and the Autobuild
Now that you know what you want to build and gather the necessary materials, it is time to build the contraption! This is all thanks to Link’s new Ultrahand ability. Link can then build the contraption again instantly using the Autobuild ability.
The Autobuild Ability saves the contraptions that Link has built using the Ultrahand Ability. To obtain this ability, the link must complete the “A Mystery in the Depths” Main Quest.
This ability can save up to 30 builds. When Link builds more, the oldest are eliminated. In addition, the player can choose up to eight of the 30 saved builds as favorites. This will keep them from being deleted. So, If you plan on using this build multiple times in the future, do this.
The player must do the following to set a build as a favorite:
- Hold the L button and use the right stick to select the Autobuild ability.
- After that, navigate to the desired build in the history section.
- Next, press the Y button to set it as a favorite. The build will subsequently be moved to the favorites section.
When using the Autibuild ability, each nearby object previously used to construct the build automatically moves to its specified location in the build. There may be instances where the player utilizes this ability but with a part (or some) missing.
Link may utilize Zonaite to duplicate the missing part and proceed with the build. However, unlike their real equivalents, Link cannot alter the duplicate parts in the build. This will cause the replica to break. Because of that, the Zonaite spent to create it is wasted.
