Outlast II
Available on: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC
Initial Release Date: 24th of April, 2017
Developed by: Red Barrels
This game shook the ground for the horror game genre, and looking at it from any angle you could see why. Let’s start with its story. It has a plot and the storyline is linear which means that you will definitely experience some connection to it.
Unfortunately, it is not third-person like The Medium, but depending on what you like, it’s no secret that first-person horror games are much scarier. That is not to say that The Medium isn’t scary enough, on the contrary, both games are close in their anxiety-inducing abilities.
Because of smart-world building by the developers, this game was sort of a pioneer in its class. The game feels much more open and freer than the other titles on the market. You get the sense as this scary world is endless.
With a bit of differences from The Medium, Outlast II is so good that it deserves a shot even if you aren’t a fan of horror game. It received thousands of positive reviews, and it truly left players shaken up!
The Evil Within 2
Available on: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC
Initial Release Date: 13th of October, 2017
Developed by: Tango Gameworks
From a technical standpoint, i.e. graphics, gameplay, and mechanics, The Evil Within is really close to The Medium. Granted The Medium is more of mystery and less violence game, but still these games are similar in the gameplay regard.
Whether you were a fan or not for this game’s predecessor, you must admit that developers did a pretty good job with the successor. Some of the quirky gameplay and non-so-scary aspects of the game were drastically improved in the sequel.
Sadly, the story and depth of characters isn’t as good as this game’s gameplay. There are some awkward conversations, and stereotypical characters that the developers use to push the story forward.
Thankfully, the experience you get by playing the game, more than makes up for the shaky story-line. What this game does best is keep you on the edge. When playing, most of the time you’ll feel as though you have barely survived a fight or a scene.
Blair Witch
Available on: PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PC
Initial Release Date: 30th of August, 2019
Developed by: Bloober Team
Unsettling is the word I would use to describe this unbelievable game. Usually, many people are weary of games that are based of off movies, with myself included. But this title truly changed my perspective, and since the developers really did the movie justice.
With the unique story like the original movie, this game is immensely detailed and rich. The way that it builds up tension is in my opinion, unparalleled by other games. During the day in the game, you feel as though someone is watching your every move, and at night time is where the real party starts.
With the dark color scheme and the amazing sound design, at night you will be holding on to your chair longing for the sunlight to come back. At times you will feel on the edge of death, and most of the time you’ll feel disoriented.
The forests in this game truly feel endless. You get the sense that you might never succeed in completing and exploring the whole place. It’s not third-person like The Medium, but the first-person is crafted exceptionally.
Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs
Available on: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Linux, MacOS
Initial Release Date: 10th of September, 2013
Developed by: The Chinese Room, Frictional Games, and Blitworks
While this title is a bit old compared to the other ones on this 5 best games like The Medium list, we must do it justice and mention it in this list. Graphics-wise seem modern and up-to-date even today, which means thankfully, you could have a more immersive experience.
The story telling is great and it is done by well written diary logs, with many creepy audio ones. On top of that, the environmental story telling is unique to Amnesia, and it has become the industry standard for it.
In search of your children, you might find madness instead. Like Blair Witch, what it does is it builds up tension in your mind and body and scares you at the worst possible moments.
Gameplay is a bit unique to Amnesia as well, with not many complex mechanics and movement, but the story and visuals are what is important in this game. Still, it’s first-person perspective, but it is definitely worth to sit comfortably on this list!
Resident Evil 2 – Remastered
Available on: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC
Initial Release Date: 25th of January, 2019
Developed by: Capcom
The remastered version of Resident Evil 2, put the developers on a throne as the best remakers of the industry. Back in the 90s this game was scary, but now, well it is definitely far more.
When you play the game it feels as modern as possible, with unbelievable animations, graphics, physics, facial expressions, and much more. It makes you wonder did they even remake a game, or develop a whole new one.
Nevertheless, this game is a horror, survival, and puzzle-solving game. What I like most are the puzzle-solving aspects of it, since most of the time when you do them, you feel an enormous fear that a zombie is behind you.
Yes, this game is a zombie horror game. Before you discard it as a unworthy contender in this five games like The Medium list, it is important to mention that these developers are unmatched when it comes to creating zombie games. Because it is third-person like The Medium, we made sure to include it in this list.
