Learn everything you need to know about shrines in Tears of the Kingdom!
One of the charms of the games in the Zelda series is its inclusion of dungeons. These dungeons usually have puzzles that Link must solve to continue. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, one of the series and gaming’s most adored and critically praised games, is no exception to this. In the game, there are locations called Shrines where Link must solve puzzles to complete them.
Upon completing the Shrine, Link will get a reward that he can exchange to get more hearts or stamina. Now that the much-awaited sequel to Breath of the Wild is finally here, fans of the beloved series ask: “Does The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom have Shrines?” In this post, we will explore that!
Shrines in Tears of the Kingdom
The simple answer to the question above is yes; there are Shrines in Tears of the Kingdom. In this game, these Shrines are called the Shrines of Light. These are sacred places that purge Darkness. The Shrines of Light in Tears of the Kingdom are still mini-dungeons with puzzles that Link must solve.
There are many differences between the Shrines in Breath of the Wild and the Shrines in Tears of the Kingdom. These differences are the following:
1. Zonai
Link finds The Ancient Shrines in Breath of the Wild from the Sheikah. These Shrines, Link will meet Sheikah Monks at the end of these Shrines. In Tears of the Kingdom, on the other hand, the Shrines of Light are created by the Zonai. Link will find a statue of King Rauru and Queen Sonia at the end of these Shrines of Light. They are the founders and first rulers of the kingdom of Hyrule.
Because they are from different cultures, these Shrines’ architecture is also different. The Ancient Shrines are brown, shaped like cones, and have blue markings. Then, to enter Ancient Shrines, Link will ride them using elevator platforms. On the other hand, the Shrines of Light in Tears of the Kingdom are egg-shaped stone structures.
Upon discovery, these Shrines have swirls of glowing green energy on top. It also has two dragon statues in the front that wrap around the middle of the back of the Shrine. To enter Shrines of Light, Link must enter through a green portal.
Visual Cues
In Breath of the Wild, the glow on the exteriors of Ancient Shrines is orange. Once Link interacts with it to open the entrance and activate the waypoint, the glow on the base of the exteriors will turn blue, but the top part will remain orange. Then, the colors will change once Link has completed the Ancient Shrine. All of the glow on the exteriors of Ancient Shrines will turn blue.
In contrast, the Shrines of Light in Tears of the Kingdom also have different visual cues. Upon finding a Shrine of Light, the only glow is the swirling green energy on top of the shrine and the green symbol that Link must interact with.
Once Link interacts with the green symbol to activate the waypoint, the symbol disappears, but the green portal to enter the Shrine will appear. After Link completes a Shrine of Light, the swirling green energy at the top of the Shrine will disappear, but the green portal will remain.
2. Light of Blessing
Although they both serve the same purpose, the Shrines in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom differ.
In Ancient Shrines in Breath of the Wild, Link receives Spirit Orbs from monks for completing the Shrines. For Shrines in Tears of the Kingdom, on the other hand, Link will receive Lights of Blessing upon completion. These are given by King Rauru and Queen Sonia’s statues. According to in-game lore, these Lights of Blessing are responsible for purging the Darkness.
Like in Spirit Orbs in Breath of the Wild, Link can exchange four Lights of Blessing for a Heart Vessel or a Stamina Vessel. A Heart Vessel adds a heart to Link’s health, while a Stamina Vessel adds 1/5th of Link’s Stamina Wheel.
Speaking of rewards, each of the Shrines in Tears of the Kingdom, like in Breath of the Wild, has at least one treasure chest that Link can find and open.
3. Number of Shrines
The number of Shrines that Link can complete in the two games also differs. In Breath of the Wild, Link can complete 120 Shrines in the base game and 16 more in the game’s DLCs, bringing it to 136 Shrines. In Tears of the Kingdom, however, Link can find and complete 152 Shrines all over Hyrule.
Also, in Tears of the Kingdom, Link can explore Hyrule’s skies and depths. So, Link can find 120 of these Shrines on the vast surface of Hyrule, while 32 of these Link will be able to find on islands in the skies of Hyrule.
Here is a list of all the Shrines that Link can find in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and each of their coordinates:
