Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us was a phenomenal achievement in video game storytelling, and HBO is set to make their adaptation with Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. The series is shooting now, but it looks like we won’t see an air date till 2023.
Talking to The Hollywood Reporter HBO Max programming chief Casey Bloys was asked about the highly anticipated series, to which he responds:
The Last of Us is shooting right now in Canada. We haven’t announced an air date yet. But it’s not 2022. They’re still shooting in Calgary.
So far, the only look we have of the last of us is the backs of Joel (Pascal) and Ellie (Ramsey), but just from the one frame, you can tell that the series is going to have the same aesthetic as the original video game. With the show shooting now, it’s possible we could get our first look sometime near the end of the year.
While the story of The Last of Us is pretty solid in itself, we should expect some changes to be made when it comes to the adaptation. While it’s a given that Joel and Ellie’s relationship is at the heart of the series, we could look at some more flashbacks between the two characters; maybe see how Joel survived 20 years after the outbreak, or how Ellie discovers that she’s immune to the virus.
No release date has been set for The Last of Us, but you can catch it on HBO Max maybe sometime next year. For now, you can play The Last of Us games on PlayStation.
