Getting shot by bullets will deal more damage, as you will be in shock and likely bleed. In Escape From Tarkov, the developers cared to simulate real combat wounds. Thus, you might find yourself getting the Heavy Bleeding status.
Fortunately, players can always treat their wounds in and out of battle. It would be best to apply for first air or receive medical assistance. The sooner you are in perfect condition, the more raids you can participate in. Keep reading to find out how to heal that Heavy Bleeding status and get back in the game.
Escape From Tarkov: How to Heal Heavy Bleeding?
Heavy Bleeding was introduced in late 2020 in Update 12.7. Light Bleeding had already been in the game for a while, but things became more complicated with the newer status. Both statuses will lead to death when ignored, necessitating medical treatment immediately.
What Is Heavy Bleeding?
Heavy Bleeding will apply the following effects every four seconds:
- Leave a trail of blood;
- 0.9 HP loss per tick in each non-destroyed body part;
- Decreased energy;
- After treatment, you get a Fresh Wound;
In contrast, Light Bleeding has none of the above effects other than a 0.8 HP loss in non-destroyed body parts per six seconds passed. As you can see here, Heavy Bleeding is a severe problem that you must address immediately.
Healing the Heavy Bleeding in a Raid
There are currently six Medical items in Escape from Tarkov that can stop Heavy Bleeding. They are:
- Salewa First Aid Kit
- Grizzly Medical Kit
- Esmarch Tourniquet
- CALOK-B Hemostatic Applicator
- CAT Hemostatic Tourniquet
- IFAK Individual First Aid Kit
- AFAK Personal Tactical First Aid Kit
To heal yourself using these items, try these steps:
- Head to a safe location after you get shot in Escape from Tarkov.
- Open your inventory.
- Drag one of the above items or right-click “use” to anybody experiencing Heavy Bleeding.
- Restore your limb or body part HP after stopping the bleeding.
- Continue fighting or try to escape.
All of the Medical items above are pretty effective at stopping Heavy Bleeding. However, the Grizzly Medical Kit is quite large, taking up a lot of room in your inventory. While it can heal torsos speedily, it’s not the best solution for blood loss.
Instead, you can try the CALOK-B Hemostatic Applicator. It’s considered one of the best items to stop Heavy Bleeding. It has a use time of three seconds, and you can even use it three times per Applicator. What’s more, you can buy it cheaply from the Therapist.
The CAT Hemostatic Tourniquet is a single-use item, but its three-second use time is practical for quick application. It’s both small and light, making it a handy healing item to bring along.
Another option is the Esmarch Tourniquet. This item has five seconds of use time and only one use per copy. However, you come across these often, making them a reliable option for stopping Heavy Bleeding in a pinch.
Both IFAK Individual First Aid Kits and AFAK Personal Tactical First Aid Kits are also valid options for healing Heavy Bleeding. They use an HP system to determine the number of uses per medkit. They also restore some HP, though they do not have many uses.
The AFAK can stop Heavy Bleeding twice, but the IFAK can only do so once. When you use one of the two to stop Heavy Bleeding, the first aid kit loses 210 HP and 170 HP. After that, you can only use them to remove Light Bleeding or restore HP.
The Salewa First Aid Kit is also an excellent option, as it heals a lot of HP in conjunction with removing bleeding effects. With a three-second use time and multiple uses, it’s only held back slightly by its larger size.
As Heavy Bleeding can occur easily, you should never head into a raid without some healing supplies. If you do not have any healing items, you will die and lose your gear. You might hide from your enemies well, but one shot might be all it takes to inflict the dreaded status.
Stopping Heavy Bleeding After Raids
You still have to heal before heading back into battle if you escape from a raid while having the Heavy Bleeding status. However, there are two main ways to recover after the action in Escape from Tarkov. One method involves healing manually, but the other will require you to unlock the Therapist.
Let’s take a look at the first method:
- After the action ends, you will be sent back to your hideout.
- You will see a healing screen pop up when you arrive.
- Go to the Health tab in the top-left corner.
- Pick some Medical items to heal your wounds and statuses.
- Selecting an item, pick “Use” from the drop-down menu.
- Choose how many of each item to use.
- Repeat for all other ailments and wounds.
Alternatively, below Level 5, clicking on “Heal All” is completely free. After reaching higher levels, you can still press that, but this action will consume excess healing items. Due to this phenomenon, it would be beneficial to select your supplies manually in the long term.
When you heal on your own, you also get some XP. You should never forget to recover after getting out of a raid alive if you have not already patched yourself up completely before escaping.
The Therapist
Once you complete some quests, you unlock Elvira Khabibullina, the Therapist. She heals you for cheap, compared to buying supplies from other characters. Not only that, but she sells Medical items at lower prices.
In addition to her medical services, she can also offer gear insurance. You get to save your gear, though compared to other NPCs, her insurance is costlier. In return, you get your lost weapons back from the field sooner.
Passive Health Regeneration
A different method you can rely on is to wait for healing to happen naturally. Passive regeneration can be helpful if you do not want to consume any healing items, but it is prolonged. What is more, you’ll still be hungry and thirsty.
Thus, even after you heal passively, your character will still need to eat meals and drink beverages. It is not the most efficient method, but one you can keep as a last resort.
Overall, the best way to heal after a raid is to visit the Therapist. You need some money, but that is not too difficult to get when you have saved enough.
Additional FAQs
Should I Use the Therapist to Heal in Escape From Tarkov?
Unless you run out of funds, it is always the better choice to heal using the Therapist’s magic touch. It is cheaper than healing manually, and you do not have to wait for passive regeneration. Medical items can be expensive, but she sells some at lower prices than other NPCs.

No, Escape from Tarkov costs $44.99 for the base game. There is a Limited Edition that sells for $139.99 as well. The game will not have a free-to-play business model, sadly.
Will My PMC Heal Over Time?
Your PMC or main character will heal in the hideout as you play Scav raids or stop playing Escape from Tarkov. It is not a great way to replenish health, but it can work occasionally.
He’s Over There!
Heavy Bleeding in Escape from Tarkov is not fun to tackle. You are at risk of detection and death, but you will also die if you do not stop the bleeding. Medical items are not too heavy, and a few first aid kits will always come through after getting shot. Thus, it would help if you always went into a raid prepared for the worst.
