Hazelight Studios’ It Takes Two had released with enormous critical praise last year, and the game was such a hit that it already got a movie deal.
According to Variety, Hazelight Studios is teaming up with dj2 Entertainment to adapt the game ‘for film and television.’ Hazelight founder Josef Fares had this to say about the deal:
“Creating the world and story in ‘It Takes Two’ was so much fun for me and the team… Since it has a strong narrative with many crazy characters and just as crazy co-op action moments, the potential is huge for a great adaption to film or television.”
Though no studio is attached to the project yet, Sonic the Hedgehog writers Josh Miller and Pat Casey are said to be tapped to bring the game to screen.
In case you’re not familiar with the game, It Takes Two follows the story of May and Cody, two humans who had been transformed into living dolls. Players must then take the two on a fantastical journey as they try to look into their fractured relationship in an attempt to return to normal.
While the story sounds standard enough, it’s the meta element of the game that brings a breath of fresh air. No single-player campaign is available, and it’s required that you find someone to play with in order to get the intended experience.
We don’t know if the film will manage to emulate that same kind of empathy, but hopefully the writers Miller and Casey are up to the task. In the meantime, you can always check out the original game.
Play as the clashing couple Cody and May, two humans turned into dolls by a magic spell. Trapped in a fantastical world, they’re reluctantly challenged with saving their fractured relationship by the suave love guru Dr. Hakim. A huge variety of gleefully disruptive gameplay challenges stand between them and their return to normal.
No release date has been set for the It Takes Two film, but you can catch the original game now available for PS4|PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
